What does an integrated circuit design engineer do?

An Integrated Circuit (IC) Design engineer is responsible for designing and developing semiconductor circuits used in electronic devices. They work on various stages of IC design, including specification, schematic design, layout, verification, and testing. Engineers use specialized tools and software to optimize performance, power efficiency, and cost. Their work is crucial in industries such as consumer electronics, automotive, telecommunications, and medical devices.

What are the typical daily tasks and collaborative workflows in an integrated circuit design role?

In an Integrated Circuit Design role, your typical day involves creating and simulating circuit layouts, conducting design reviews, and verifying the functionality of chip designs using specialized EDA software. You'll frequently collaborate with cross-functional teams, such as system architects, verification engineers, and layout designers, to refine specifications and troubleshoot design issues. Communication is key, as progress updates and technical findings are often shared during regular team meetings. The role combines independent technical work with joint problem-solving, making it both challenging and rewarding for those who enjoy innovative engineering environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the integrated circuit design position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Integrated Circuit Design, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, semiconductor physics, and circuit theory, often with at least a bachelor's or master's degree in a related field. Proficiency with Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools like Cadence or Synopsys, as well as experience with hardware description languages such as VHDL or Verilog, is crucial. Excellent problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills set candidates apart in team-driven design environments. These combined skills ensure accurate, efficient design and implementation of complex integrated circuits critical to a wide range of electronic products.

Company Description
Renesas is an embedded semiconductor solution provider driven by its Purpose 'To Make Our Lives Easier.' As the industry's leading expert in embedded processing with unmatched quality and system-level know-how, we have evolved to provide scalable and comprehensive semiconductor solutions for automotive, industrial, infrastructure, and IoT industries based on the broadest product portfolio, including High Performance Computing, Embedded Processing, Analog & Connectivity, and Power.
Job Description
Design and verify analog block-level and subsystem circuits for custom mixed-signal ASICs, ensuring they meet functional, performance, power, area, and schedule requirements. Translate customer and product requirements into clear design specifications and practical circuit solutions.
Responsibilities
  • Design and verify CMOS analog circuits for custom mixed-signal ASICs, including amplifiers, oscillators, LDOs, comparators, references, and biasing circuits.
  • Take technical ownership of assigned subsystems and guide them from specification and design through silicon validation and production ramp.
  • Collaborate with project leads and cross-functional teams to define system architecture and design strategies.
  • Work closely with Layout Engineering to guide physical implementation and ensure layout quality for assigned circuits.
  • Develop and maintain accurate design specifications, simulation results, review materials, and technical documentation.
  • Partner with Design-for-Test engineers to support DFT strategy and implementation.
  • Lead silicon debugging, characterization, and laboratory evaluation activities for assigned designs.
  • Collaborate with Test and Product Engineering to support test development, qualification, and production ramp.
  • Identify technical risks and resolve design issues through analysis, simulation, and laboratory investigation.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced engineers.
  • Take ownership of continued technical and professional development through internal learning, collaboration, and knowledge sharing.

Qualifications
  • 5-8 years of relevant experience in analog or mixed-signal integrated circuit design.
  • Hands-on experience designing and verifying CMOS analog circuits, including amplifiers, oscillators, LDOs, comparators, voltage references, and biasing circuits.
  • Experience with subsystem- and chip-level verification, including analog mixed-signal verification.
  • Strong proficiency with EDA design tools and the Cadence design environment.
  • Experience designing filters, PLLs, or RF circuits such as LNAs and mixers is preferred.
  • Ability to select appropriate design methods, tools, and techniques to resolve complex technical problems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop practical and innovative design solutions.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision while collaborating effectively across project teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to make significant technical contributions to complex engineering projects.
  • Ability to clearly share technical knowledge and provide guidance or mentorship to less experienced engineers.
  • Results-oriented, with the ability to deliver high-quality work within demanding project schedules.
  • Strong written, verbal, presentation, and technical communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within multisite and multicultural teams.
  • Cross-cultural awareness and sensitivity.
  • Willingness to undertake occasional international travel, including at short notice.

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Electronics Engineering, Microelectronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
