As of Aug 17, 2026, the average yearly pay for integrated circuit design engineer in Georgia is $93,554.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $70,500.00 and $111,900.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges integrated circuit design engineers face during the design and verification process?

Integrated Circuit Design Engineers often encounter challenges related to balancing performance, power consumption, and area constraints while meeting project deadlines. Navigating complex verification processes to ensure functionality and manufacturability can be time-consuming, especially as designs grow in size and complexity. Additionally, effective collaboration with cross-functional teams such as layout, test, and product engineers is crucial to resolve integration issues and ensure a successful tape-out. Staying updated with evolving design tools and technology nodes also presents an ongoing learning curve.

What does an integrated circuit design engineer do?

An Integrated Circuit (IC) Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing microchips or integrated circuits used in electronic devices. They work with teams to create schematics, run simulations, and ensure that chips meet performance and power requirements. Their role often involves using specialized software tools for layout and verification, as well as collaborating with manufacturing teams to bring designs to production. IC Design Engineers play a crucial role in advancing technology in industries such as computing, telecommunications, automotive, and consumer electronics.

What is the difference between Integrated Circuit Design Engineer vs Electronics Engineer?

AspectIntegrated Circuit Design EngineerElectronics Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, VLSI design certificationsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, related certifications
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, CAD software, semiconductor companiesManufacturing plants, R&D labs, electronics firms
Industry UsageSemiconductor, consumer electronics, telecommunicationsConsumer electronics, industrial equipment, aerospace

Integrated Circuit Design Engineers focus on designing and developing integrated circuits using specialized software, primarily working in semiconductor companies. Electronics Engineers have a broader scope, working on electronic systems and devices across various industries. While both roles require electrical engineering backgrounds, IC Design Engineers specialize in chip-level design, whereas Electronics Engineers work on complete electronic systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an integrated circuit design engineer?

To thrive as an Integrated Circuit Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, semiconductor physics, and circuit analysis, often supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency in EDA tools such as Cadence, Synopsys, or Mentor Graphics, along with knowledge of VHDL or Verilog, is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork abilities are crucial soft skills in this field. These competencies ensure the accurate design, optimization, and successful implementation of complex integrated circuits essential for modern electronics.

Job description

Job Summary:
The Electrical Design Engineer I is an entry-level engineering role responsible for supporting the design, development, verification, and production of motor automation and switchgear systems. This position provides hands-on exposure to electrical system design, drafting standards, component selection, and compliance testing while working under the guidance of senior engineers.
He/She will apply engineering principles, drafting standards, and manufacturing best practices to support existing product lines and contribute to new product development, continuous improvement initiatives, and engineering change activities.
Essential Responsibilities:
1. Electrical Design & Documentation
  • Develop and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and cabinet layouts for motor operator systems in accordance with company standards and applicable codes.
  • Create and revise 2D/3D drawings and models using AutoCAD and SolidWorks for existing and new product designs.
  • Generate and maintain engineering documentation, including specifications, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and revision-controlled drawings.
  • Support engineering change activities, including design updates and documentation revisions.
  • Support the development and refinement of printed circuit board (PCB) designs under the supervision of senior engineers.
  • Assist with schematic capture, component placement reviews, and layout verification to ensure compliance with electrical, mechanical, and manufacturability requirements.
  • Participate in PCB design reviews, providing input on component selection, signal routing considerations, grounding, and power distribution.

2. Engineering Support & Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Work under the guidance of senior engineers on assigned design and development projects.
  • Provide technical support to manufacturing and field installation teams, including design clarification, troubleshooting, and implementation support.
  • Assist with component selection and alternate sourcing, evaluating form-fit-function and updating documentation as required.

3. Prototyping, Testing & Validation
  • Support the development of functional prototypes, samples, and demonstration units to validate design intent.
  • Perform engineering verification and validation testing in the lab under supervision.
  • Gain familiarity with ANSI, IEC and applicable industry standards and their application to product design and testing.
