Instrument Operator– Land Surveying

Houston, Texas

CBG Surveying is looking for a motivated Instrument Man (Iman) to join our Houston field operations team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working outdoors, learning new skills, and building a long-term career in land surveying.

Position Summary

As an Instrument Man, you will assist the Survey Crew Chief in collecting accurate field data for a variety of surveying projects, including boundary, topographic, construction, and commercial surveys. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on work, takes pride in accuracy, and thrives in a fast-paced outdoor environment.

This position reports directly to the Survey Field Manager.

What You'll Do

  • Set up and operate total stations, GPS equipment, and other survey instruments.
  • Assist in collecting accurate field measurements and survey data.
  • Perform closed-loop traverses, trigonometric leveling, and field calculations.
  • Perform COGO functions including:
    • Inverse
    • Resection
    • Line staking
    • Coordinate translation and rotation
  • Read and interpret:
    • Recorded subdivision plats
    • Metes and bounds legal descriptions
    • Construction plans and specifications
  • Perform map checks and calculate error of closure using Carlson SurvCE.
  • Locate property corners using survey records, deeds, plats, and electronic locating equipment.
  • Collect line work and accurately record field information.
  • Learn and apply CBG Surveying field coding standards.
  • Assist with clearing survey lines using hand tools and equipment when necessary.
  • Calibrate and maintain prism rods and survey equipment.
  • Ensure company vehicles are properly stocked and maintained.
  • Carry and transport survey instruments, stakes, hubs, lath, nails, hammers, and other field equipment.
  • Follow all safety procedures while working in varying outdoor conditions.
  • Work closely with the Survey Crew Chief to complete projects safely and efficiently.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Additional coursework in surveying is a plus.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Land surveying terminology
    • Survey field procedures
    • Basic mathematical principles
    • Safe work practices
  • Experience operating survey equipment, including total stations and data collectors.
  • Ability to interpret plats, legal descriptions, and construction plans.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Good organizational and time management abilities.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform physically demanding work.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
