Job Purpose
The Environmental Programs Manager is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of Herc Rentals' environmental programs, regulatory compliance, and environmental risk management activities across a national portfolio of operating locations. This role serves as the primary environmental subject matter expert and key point of contact for senior leadership, operations, and external regulatory agencies. The primary objective of the role is to proactively manage environmental risk, ensure regulatory compliance, and minimize environmental liabilities across Herc's portfolio of locations and assets.
What you will do...
  • Serve as the enterprise lead for all environmental programs, compliance initiatives, and environmental risk management activities, including stormwater, industrial wastewater, hazardous materials, petroleum storage, and spill response programs.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain environmental policies, procedures, and standards to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Lead environmental due diligence activities related to real estate transactions, including Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments.
  • Manage site investigations, remediation projects, and environmental response actions, including coordination with consultants, contractors, regulators, and property owners.
  • Oversee corporate programs related to fuel systems and petroleum storage, including underground and aboveground storage tank upgrades and removals, permitting, inspections, testing, fire code coordination, and regulatory reporting.
  • Provide technical guidance and ongoing support to field operations regarding hazardous materials management, waste handling, spill prevention, and emergency response.
  • Develop, coordinate, and maintain environmental training programs for field including regulatory-required training, internal procedures, and incident response awareness.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to identify, assess, and mitigate environmental risks associated with business decisions.
  • Negotiate and manage contracts with environmental vendors and consultants to ensure cost-effective service delivery.
  • Monitor and manage environmental compliance costs and liabilities, providing regular reporting and financial oversight.
  • Serve as the primary corporate point of contact with regulatory agencies to manage permitting, inspections, reporting, compliance assistance, notices of violation, and enforcement actions.
  • Exercise independent judgment in balancing regulatory requirements with operational and business objectives and regularly engage with senior leadership on environmental risk and compliance matters.

Requirements
  • 8-12 years of progressive experience in environmental compliance or environmental programs management supporting multi-site operations
    • Prior in-house corporate experience strongly preferred
    • Demonstrated experience managing environmental investigations and remediation projects
    • Strong project and vendor management skills

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related discipline required
  • Master's degree preferred
