Insurance Recovery Attorney information

What is an insurance recovery attorney?

An Insurance Recovery Attorney is a legal professional who specializes in helping individuals and businesses obtain insurance coverage and payments they are entitled to under their policies. They assist clients in disputes with insurance companies, such as claim denials, delayed payments, or underpaid claims. These attorneys represent policyholders in negotiations, settlement discussions, and lawsuits to ensure their rights are protected and they receive the benefits promised by their insurance contracts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an insurance recovery attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Insurance Recovery Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, state bar admission, and strong expertise in insurance law and policy analysis. Familiarity with legal research tools (like Westlaw or LexisNexis), litigation management software, and e-discovery platforms is typically required. Outstanding negotiation, analytical thinking, and client communication skills set top performers apart in this field. These competencies ensure effective representation of clients in coverage disputes, maximize favorable outcomes, and foster trust in complex, high-stakes legal matters.

What are some common challenges faced by insurance recovery attorneys when negotiating with insurance companies?

Insurance Recovery Attorneys often encounter challenges such as complex policy language, delayed responses from insurers, and aggressive defense strategies aimed at minimizing payouts. Navigating these issues requires strong negotiation skills, a deep understanding of insurance law, and the ability to interpret detailed policy provisions. Attorneys in this role frequently collaborate with clients, experts, and sometimes other legal teams to build a compelling case, ensuring that clients receive the coverage they are entitled to under their policies.

Job description

Personal Injury Paralegal
Case Management & Settlement Focus
Tired of being a cog in someone else’s caseload? This is a role with real autonomy — you’ll own pre-litigation cases from post-intake through settlement, build the demand packages, and negotiate directly with adjusters to drive cases to resolution. If you’re an experienced plaintiff-side paralegal who wants ownership and impact, read on.

About Us
Moorehead Legal is a dynamic and respected personal injury law firm dedicated to fighting for the rights of injured individuals. We pride ourselves on aggressive advocacy, meticulous case preparation, and achieving optimal results for our clients. We foster a collaborative, fast-paced environment where initiative and expertise are valued.
The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced, highly organized, and proactive Personal Injury Paralegal to play a pivotal role in managing our pre-litigation caseload from post-intake through settlement. This position is primarily focused on developing compelling demand packages, negotiating settlements directly with insurance adjusters, and ensuring efficient case progression. You will work closely with our attorneys, under their supervision, while having significant autonomy in driving cases toward resolution.
Key Responsibilities
Case Management (Post-Intake to Settlement)
•     Oversee a portfolio of pre-litigation personal injury cases (auto accidents, slips/falls, etc.).
•     Conduct thorough client intake assessments and maintain consistent, empathetic communication.
•     Proactively manage the case lifecycle, ensuring all deadlines (statutes of limitations, provider liens) are met.
•     Order, review, organize, and summarize medical records, bills, and related documentation.
•     Track and document all case activities, correspondence, and developments meticulously in the case management system.
•     Calculate and verify medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages.
Demand Package Drafting & Settlement Negotiation
•     Draft comprehensive, persuasive settlement demand packages, including detailed cover letters, liability analysis, summaries of injuries and treatment, itemized special damages, and supporting documentation.
•     Conduct thorough liability and damages analysis to support demand valuation.
•     Initiate and conduct direct negotiations with insurance adjusters to secure optimal pre-litigation settlements, under attorney supervision.
•     Clearly communicate settlement offers, negotiation progress, and recommendations to attorneys.
•     Prepare settlement documentation (settlement statements, releases, disbursement sheets) and coordinate final disbursements and lien resolutions.
Client & Provider Liaison
•     Serve as a primary point of contact for clients regarding case status, treatment updates, and the settlement process.
•     Communicate effectively with medical providers, employers, witnesses, and insurance representatives.
Required Qualifications
•     Minimum 3 years of paralegal experience in plaintiff-side personal injury law.
•     Proven experience drafting persuasive demand packages and directly negotiating settlements with insurance adjusters.
•     In-depth understanding of personal injury claims processes, damages (medical, wage loss, pain & suffering), and insurance practices.
•     Strong ability to review, analyze, and summarize complex medical records and billing, and to calculate and verify economic damages.
•     Proficiency in legal case management software (e.g., Filevine, Needles, Clio, SmartAdvocate) and Microsoft Office Suite.
•     Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with a professional and empathetic phone manner.
•     Superior organization, time management, and the ability to independently prioritize and manage a caseload in a fast-paced environment.
•     High degree of discretion in handling confidential and sensitive information.
Preferred Qualifications
•     Paralegal Certificate (ABA-approved program).
•     Experience with lien resolution (Medicare, Medicaid, ERISA, private health).
•     Familiarity with litigation procedures (though this role is primarily pre-litigation).
•     Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus, given our client base.
What We Offer
•     Onsite position in our Pikesville office
•     Competitive base salary ($50,000–$60,000) plus bonus opportunity.
•     Access to a 401(k) retirement plan.
•     Paid time off, including vacation, sick leave, and paid holidays.
•     Opportunity for professional growth and development.
•     A supportive, collaborative team environment doing meaningful work that helps injured individuals recover.
