What is insurance product management?

Insurance product management is the process of developing, launching, and overseeing insurance products such as policies and coverage plans. Product managers in this field analyze market trends, assess customer needs, and collaborate with underwriting, actuarial, and marketing teams to create competitive insurance offerings. They are responsible for the entire lifecycle of an insurance product, ensuring it remains profitable and compliant with industry regulations. Their work helps insurance companies adapt to changing markets and deliver value to their clients.

How does an insurance product manager typically collaborate with underwriting, sales, and actuarial teams?

Insurance Product Managers work closely with underwriting teams to ensure products align with risk appetite and compliance requirements, while collaborating with actuarial teams to analyze data and set competitive pricing strategies. They also partner with sales and marketing to support product launches and gather feedback to refine offerings. Regular cross-functional meetings and project teams are common, as effective communication among these departments is essential for developing successful insurance products. This collaborative environment not only enhances product quality but also helps build a comprehensive understanding of the entire product lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an insurance product manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Insurance Product Manager, you need a strong background in risk analysis, product development, and market research, often supported by a degree in business, finance, or actuarial science. Familiarity with insurance policy management systems, data analytics tools, and regulatory compliance software is typically required. Strategic thinking, effective communication, and cross-functional collaboration are crucial soft skills that distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities ensure the creation of competitive insurance products that meet market needs while adhering to regulatory standards and driving business growth.

If you have a good attitude and are willing to roll up your sleeves to get things done, PitchBook is the place for you.
About the Role:
Used by 1M+ professionals, PitchBook is the premier resource for comprehensive, best-in-class data and insights on the global capital markets. As a member of the Product and Engineering team at PitchBook, you will be part of a team of big thinkers, innovators, and problem solvers who strive to deepen the positive impact we have on our customers every day. We value curiosity, the drive to find better ways of doing things, and customer empathy as the foundation for excellent product experiences. Are you a strategic Director of Product Management with deep financial domain expertise and a proven history of scaling product initiatives from concept to commercial success? We are seeking an inspirational product leader to own strategic roadmaps and drive organizational success across high-impact product areas. This is an executive-facing role responsible for translating strategic vision into revenue growth for PitchBook. You will manage and mentor a team of Product Managers, serving as the critical bridge between product execution, commercial strategy, and executive leadership. • Own the roadmap and strategic vision, ensuring alignment with PitchBook's corporate strategy, market opportunity, and competitive landscape
  • Partner with other leaders to optimize staffing plans across Product, Design, and Engineering
  • Lead, manage, and mentor a team of Product Managers, fostering a culture of high performance, experimentation, and deep customer empathy
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for executive leadership, clearly articulating product strategy, commercial performance, resource needs, and market risks
  • Maintain a deep understanding of Private Market workflows and emerging customer needs, ensuring PitchBook maintains a clear competitive advantage
  • Model and encourage company values and desired behaviors

Skills and Qualifications:
  • 12+ years of progressive product management experience, with 7+ years of management experience
  • Demonstrated success leading the strategy, launch, and scaling of new product initiatives that resulted in significant revenue growth and market share capture
  • Deep, credible understanding of the Private Equity, Venture Capital, or Investment Banking ecosystem
  • Ability to synthesize market research, competitive analysis, and ambiguous customer data into a clear, defensible product strategy
  • Outstanding leadership, communication, and storytelling skills, with the ability to confidently present and defend strategic recommendations to executive stakeholders
  • Proven ability to manage, mentor, and grow product management talent within a high-growth, demanding environment
  • Strong technical foundation; capable of driving strategic discussions on data architecture, machine learning applications, and enterprise system integration
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for visa sponsorship now or in the future

Working Conditions:
At the heart of our company is a belief in the power of in-person collaboration. Being together in the office fuels our creativity, strengthens our connections, and drives the innovation that sets us apart. Our culture is built on spontaneous moments-those hallway conversations, whiteboard brainstorms, and shared celebrations in each of our global offices-that simply can't be replicated remotely. This role is expected to be in the office 5 days a week.
The job conditions for this position are in a standard office setting. Employees in this position use PC and phone on an on-going basis throughout the day. Limited corporate travel may be required to remote offices or other business meetings and events.
We are excited to get to know you and your background. Concerned that you might not meet every requirement? We encourage you to still apply as you might be the right candidate for the role or other roles at PitchBook.
