Job description

Overview
Ready to shape the future of science and global health? ATCC, a global nonprofit that provides trusted biological materials for science and health, is seeking a Licensing Manager with deep experience negotiating complex, revenue-generating out-licensing agreements for scientific or IP-driven assets. Based in Gaithersburg, MD or Manassas, VA, this role leads global commercial out-licensing for trusted biological materials used in regulated manufacturing and applied research environments. The position requires strong scientific and business acumen to enable responsible global access to ATCC's scientific assets through compliant, strategic licensing.
This Licensing Manager serves as a key individual contributor and strategic partner, developing and executing global licensing strategies, managing complex international out-licensing transactions, and expanding ATCC's licensing portfolio across diverse markets with a focus on international licensing. Working closely with legal, finance, product, and distributor management teams, this role negotiates and structures licensing and collaborative agreements that protect brand integrity, ensure appropriate use of ATCC assets, and drive sustainable licensing revenue. Join ATCC and be part of a team that supports the global scientific community with trusted, authenticated biological materials.
Responsibilities
  • International Licensing Strategy & Deal Execution: Lead end-to-end international out-licensing activities, including evaluation of commercial use inquiries, negotiation of new licenses, renewals, and amendments, and execution of agreements aligned with established licensing playbooks and revenue objectives.
  • Commercial & IP Due Diligence: Conduct market, technical, and IP assessments to evaluate field-of-use requests, qualify potential licensees, and ensure appropriate, compliant use of ATCC biological materials in manufacturing and commercial applications.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with legal, finance, product management, and international distributors to structure competitive licensing terms and support country-specific market considerations and bioproduction use cases.
  • Operational Management & Reporting: Manage licensing workflows from inquiry through execution, maintain accurate data in IP management systems, and deliver licensing metrics, forecasts, and reports to senior leadership.
  • Global Licensing Program Support: Provide direction and guidance to project teams or contributors, supporting efficient deal flow, continuous improvement, and sustained licensing revenue growth.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and 8 or more years' experience (or Master's and 6 years, or PhD and 3 years), including 0-2 years' supervisory experience or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in intellectual property licensing, commercial agreements, or technology transfer, with a strong emphasis on international out-licensing and revenue-generating deals.
  • Demonstrated success managing complex commercial license negotiations within life sciences, biotechnology, biomanufacturing, or regulated biological materials environments.
  • Proven experience leading complex, end-to-end licensing negotiations, including new licenses, renewals, and amendments, with the ability to secure favorable commercial, legal, and financial terms.
  • Strong background collaborating cross-functionally with legal, finance, product management, and international distribution teams to structure, negotiate, and execute licensing and collaborative agreements.
  • Working knowledge of a broad range of commercial and collaborative agreements, including license agreements, confidentiality agreements, material transfer agreements, etc.
  • Knowledge of IP, freedom-to-operate assessments and field of use licensing.
  • International licensing experience highly preferred but not required.
Benefits
The expected salary range for this position is $100,000 to $120,000 annually. Actual compensation will be determined based on experience and qualifications as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. In addition to base salary, this role may be eligible for additional incentive compensation including regular merit increases and the corporate bonus program.
