Role Overview

The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) seeks an experienced Chief Learning Officer to lead the mission of advancing dental education quality and role. The CLO will focus on competency‑based dental education, interprofessional education, continuous learning across the continuum, and programs that support learners, educators, and administrators globally.

Core Responsibilities
  • Supervise and mentor the Vice President of eLearn, Director of Leadership Programs, and Manager of Learning Analytics.
  • Oversee all dental education programming (predoctoral, allied, and advanced) through the Office of Learning.
  • Lead development of innovative learning programs and models for association members worldwide.
  • Develop strategic planning for workshops, meetings, webinars, and electronic educational offerings aligned with strategic initiatives.
  • Explore and apply emerging technologies and educational delivery models to improve learner experience and access.
  • Build critical thinking skills and support evidence‑based learning with assessment tools.
  • Assist the Office of Talent Management Development with staff education and training programs.
  • Manage the Office of Learning budget and ensure compliance with CCEPR (CERP).
  • Oversee and support the Continuing Education Advisory Committee and report to the Board of Directors as required.
  • Ensure accurate management of scholarship reviews, CE verifications, and trend/outcome reports.
  • Support the Section on Academic Affairs and other groups as assigned.
  • Manage the Council of Deans Fellowship Program and support the Fellows and Alumni Association.
  • Oversee relationships with external vendors for leadership program development.
  • Collaborate with other office Chiefs to advance the organization’s mission and strategic framework.
  • Liaise with other health‑care and dental organizations.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Senior Chief, Knowledge, Engagement and Development.
Qualifications
  • Fifteen or more years of cumulative experience in higher education or health‑professions association, with more than five years in a senior leadership role.
  • Doctoral degree in dentistry, a health‑professions field, higher education, adult education, or related fields. Certification in continuing education, adult education, and/or curriculum design is a plus.
  • Thorough knowledge of higher education, adult learning, educational technologies (including online learning), and related academic programs.
  • Demonstrated communication and problem‑solving capacity in a complex organization.
  • Prior supervisory, senior managerial, and fiduciary experience.
  • Ability to balance multiple projects and shifting priorities to meet tight deadlines while ensuring collaborative execution.
  • Team‑player skill set with flexibility and hands‑on guidance as needed.
  • Strategic leadership ability and independent work toward agreed goals.
  • Effective collaboration in a diverse team environment.
  • Travel readiness for external member meetings, including some weekends.
  • Hybrid work schedule acceptance (4 days in DC and 1 day remote). Ability to work from the DC office as required.
