What is an insurance data engineer?

Insurance Data Engineers are professionals who design, build, and maintain data systems that support the needs of insurance companies. They are responsible for collecting, organizing, and processing large amounts of data from various sources to enable accurate risk assessment, pricing, claims analysis, and regulatory compliance. Their work helps insurers make data-driven decisions, improve efficiency, and enhance customer experiences by leveraging modern data technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an insurance data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Insurance Data Engineer, you need strong expertise in data modeling, ETL processes, and a solid understanding of insurance data structures, typically supported by a degree in computer science, data engineering, or a related field. Proficiency with SQL, Python, big data platforms (like Hadoop or Spark), and experience with cloud data solutions such as AWS or Azure are commonly required, along with certifications like AWS Certified Data Analytics or Google Cloud Data Engineer. About the Job
The Senior Data Consultant - Lending & Credit Data will lead enterprise data initiatives supporting Lending, Credit, and Risk organizations. This role requires a unique combination of deep-lending domain expertise and hands-on Databricks experience to bridge business objectives with enterprise data delivery.
The successful candidate will serve as a strategic liaison between Lending and Credit business stakeholders, Enterprise Data Modeling teams, and Data Engineering organizations to ensure business requirements are translated into scalable, governed, and high-quality data solutions.
Unlike a traditional project management role, this position requires the ability to work directly with data assets and Databricks environments to support requirements validation, data analysis, issue resolution, and successful delivery outcomes. What You Will Do
  • Act as the primary liaison between Lending and Credit business stakeholders, Enterprise Data Modeling teams, and Data Engineering organizations.
  • Translate business requirements into scalable data solutions supporting lending, credit, and risk initiatives.
  • Partner with business leaders, data modelers, architects, and engineers to ensure alignment on data definitions, models, and business objectives.
  • Utilize Databricks to analyze and validate data, investigate issues, and support delivery of enterprise data initiatives.
  • Drive data governance, data quality, and consistency across lending and credit data domains.
  • Review conceptual, logical, and physical data models to ensure alignment with business requirements.
  • Support enterprise data strategy initiatives and identify opportunities for process improvement and operational efficiency.
  • Communicate project status, risks, metrics, and business insights through executive reporting and Power BI dashboards.

What You Will Bring
  • Deep expertise within Banking and Financial Services, with a strong focus on Commercial Lending, Credit Risk, Credit Modeling, and Risk Exposure Management.
  • Demonstrated experience working with lending and credit data, business processes, and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Hands-on Databricks experience, including working directly with data, validating data assets, performing analysis, and collaborating with Data Engineering teams.
  • Strong understanding of enterprise data modeling concepts, data governance, metadata management, and data quality best practices.
  • Experience serving as a liaison between business stakeholders and technical delivery teams.
  • Ability to translate complex lending and credit business requirements into enterprise data solutions.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder management, consulting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience using Power BI and enterprise data modeling tools is highly preferred.

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Analytics, or a related field required.
  • Master's degree (MBA, Information Systems, Data Analytics, Finance, or related discipline) a plus.
  • Relevant industry certifications in Data Management, Data Governance, Databricks, Banking, Lending, or Project Management are a plus.
