What is an insurance data engineer?

Insurance Data Engineers are professionals who design, build, and maintain data systems that support the needs of insurance companies. They are responsible for collecting, organizing, and processing large amounts of data from various sources to enable accurate risk assessment, pricing, claims analysis, and regulatory compliance. Their work helps insurers make data-driven decisions, improve efficiency, and enhance customer experiences by leveraging modern data technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an insurance data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Insurance Data Engineer, you need strong expertise in data modeling, ETL processes, and a solid understanding of insurance data structures, typically supported by a degree in computer science, data engineering, or a related field. Proficiency with SQL, Python, big data platforms (like Hadoop or Spark), and experience with cloud data solutions such as AWS or Azure are commonly required, along with certifications like AWS Certified Data Analytics or Google Cloud Data Engineer. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills help you bridge technical and business needs while ensuring data quality. These abilities are essential for building robust data pipelines and enabling accurate data-driven decision making within insurance organizations.

How does an insurance data engineer typically collaborate with actuarial and underwriting teams?

Insurance Data Engineers work closely with actuarial and underwriting teams to ensure that the data infrastructure supports accurate risk assessment and pricing models. They often translate business requirements from these teams into technical specifications, build data pipelines to source and clean relevant data, and assist in implementing predictive analytics tools. Regular communication and collaboration are essential, as data engineers help bridge the gap between raw data and actionable insights for decision-making. This teamwork not only streamlines workflow but also enables continuous improvement of insurance products and customer experience.

Data Engineer — Position Summary

Adroit Affine is looking for a Data Engineer to design, build and maintain the data pipelines, warehouses and integration layers that power analytics and machine learning initiatives for enterprise clients. You will work with a modern data stack — dbt, Apache Airflow, Spark and cloud-native data platforms — to deliver reliable, well-governed data products.

Key Responsibilities
  • Build and maintain ELT/ETL pipelines using Python, dbt, Apache Airflow or Prefect.
  • Design and implement data models in cloud warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery or Redshift).
  • Ingest data from diverse sources: APIs, databases, event streams and flat files.
  • Ensure data quality through testing, validation and automated monitoring.
  • Work with data architects to design scalable, modular data platform components.
  • Collaborate with data scientists and business analysts to understand their data needs.
  • Document data lineage, schema definitions and pipeline dependencies.
  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to data engineering best practices.
Required Qualifications
  • 2+ years of professional data engineering experience.
  • Proficiency in Python 3 for data processing and workflow automation.
  • Strong SQL skills and experience with at least one cloud data warehouse.
  • Experience with ELT/ETL orchestration tools (Airflow, Prefect, Dagster or similar).
  • Familiarity with dbt for data transformation and testing.
  • Understanding of data modelling: star/snowflake schemas, data vault.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Apache Spark / PySpark experience for large-scale data processing.
  • Stream processing with Apache Kafka, Kinesis or Pub/Sub.
  • Experience with Delta Lake, Apache Iceberg or Hudi.
  • Knowledge of data governance and cataloguing tools (Alation, DataHub).
Compensation & Benefits
  • Salary: $75,000 – $125,000 based on experience.
  • Comprehensive health, dental and vision insurance.
  • Hybrid / remote work options available.
  • Learning budget for certifications (dbt, Snowflake, cloud platforms).
  • Exposure to diverse data stacks across multiple enterprise client environments.
Requirements

2+ years of data engineering experience; proficiency in Python 3 and SQL.

Experience with Airflow, Prefect or Dagster; dbt for transformations.

Solid cloud data warehouse knowledge (Snowflake, BigQuery or Redshift).
