Is insurance broking a good career?

Insurance brokers facilitate the sale of insurance policies between clients and providers, requiring strong communication and sales skills. The profession offers opportunities for commission-based income, career growth, and the potential for specialization in areas like health, auto, or commercial insurance. Job stability and earnings depend on experience, network, and market conditions.

Can you make good money as an Insurance Broker?

Insurance brokers can earn a substantial income, often earning commissions based on the policies they sell, with top performers making six-figure incomes. Income varies depending on experience, sales skills, client base, and the types of insurance products offered. Successful brokers typically need strong communication skills, industry knowledge, and licensing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Insurance Broker, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Insurance Broker, you need a solid understanding of insurance products, risk assessment, and relevant regulations, often supported by a state license and sometimes a bachelor's degree. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software and industry-specific quoting or underwriting systems is typically required. Exceptional interpersonal skills, negotiation abilities, and attention to detail help build trust and deliver tailored solutions to clients. These competencies are crucial for matching clients with appropriate coverage, maintaining compliance, and growing a loyal client base.

What are insurance brokers?

Insurance brokers are professionals who act as intermediaries between clients seeking insurance coverage and insurance companies. They assess their clients' needs, provide advice on suitable policies, and help clients compare options from multiple insurers to find the best coverage at a competitive price. Unlike insurance agents who represent specific insurers, brokers work on behalf of their clients. They also assist with paperwork, policy renewals, and claims if needed. Insurance brokers must be licensed and are often compensated through commissions from insurance companies.

What is the difference between Insurance Brokers vs Insurance Agents?

AspectInsurance BrokersInsurance Agents
CredentialsLicenses required; often work independently or with multiple insurersLicenses required; typically represent a single insurer or a limited number
Work EnvironmentIndependent or with brokerage firms; client-focusedEmployed by insurance companies; sales-driven
Employer & Industry UsageOperate across multiple insurers; serve diverse clientsWork for specific insurance companies; sell their policies
Comparison Search IntentLooking for independent advice and policy optionsSeeking policies from specific insurers or brand

Insurance brokers act as independent advisors representing multiple insurers, helping clients find the best coverage. Insurance agents typically work for a single insurer, selling that company's policies. Both roles require licensing, but brokers offer broader options, while agents focus on their employer's products.

What are some common challenges insurance brokers face when balancing client needs with insurance carrier requirements?

Insurance brokers often navigate the delicate balance between advocating for their clients’ best interests and complying with the underwriting guidelines and policies set by insurance carriers. This can sometimes mean managing client expectations when certain coverages are unavailable or when premiums are higher than anticipated. Brokers must communicate clearly and transparently, ensuring clients understand their options while maintaining strong relationships with carriers to access the best possible solutions. Developing negotiation skills and staying updated on industry trends can help brokers address these challenges effectively.

What jobs make $3,000 a month without a degree?

Insurance brokers can earn around $3,000 or more per month through commissions and sales, often without requiring a college degree. Success in this role depends on sales skills, industry knowledge, and building client relationships, with some brokers earning significantly higher incomes. Other jobs that can reach this income level without a degree include sales representatives, real estate agents, and certain skilled trades like electricians or plumbers, which may require certifications or apprenticeships.

How much do brokers make on insurance?

Insurance brokers typically earn a commission based on the policies they sell, which can range from 10% to 20% of the premium amount. Their total income depends on sales volume, experience, and the types of insurance they handle, with many earning between $40,000 and $100,000 annually, and top performers making more. Brokers often work on commission and may also receive fees for consulting or policy management.

Job description

The Opportunity:
More than 80% of Americans own a car and see it as one of their biggest financial commitments, yet managing one still means paperwork, phone holds, and switching between apps that don't talk to each other. Jerry.ai built the first app to manage it all - insurance shopping, refinancing, safety, and repairs - and since launching in 2019, we've grown to over 5M customers.
Every one of those customers comes to us already looking for a policy, through our mobile or web app. As an Insurance Sales Agent, your job is to take that interest and turn it into a bound policy, matching each customer with the right coverage from one of Jerry's 55+ carrier partners.
Who you are:
  • You have 2+ years of experience as a top-performing sales agent
  • You can multitask and manage multiple competing priorities
  • You are passionate about helping others

How you will make an impact:
  • Respond to inbound calls from prospective customers for personal line auto, home, motorcycle, and other specialty insurance policies
  • Educate customers on insurance policy details such as coverage and pricing
  • Prepare and bind quotes through our carriers
  • Effectively problem solve and objection handle to remove barriers from the customer purchasing the policy with Jerry
  • Provide attentive, high energy conversation with customers that show we are actively engaged in finding a policy that best fits each individual's needs

Compensation and perks:
  • Hourly wage: $19.00 - 21.00 plus uncapped commissions (on target annual earnings: $100,000-$150,000+)
  • We will pay for your P&C license (expected within 2 weeks after starting)
  • Medical, dental, vision insurance, 401K match
  • Ability to work remotely (we provide work equipment)
  • Ongoing training and mentorship from our leadership team
  • An outstanding portfolio of insurance carriers and products - we work with over 55 carriers to ensure we can offer our customers the best options for them

This role includes flexible scheduling options, with the choice between a 5-day, 8-hour schedule or a 4-day, 10-hour workweek.
While we appreciate your interest and application, due to the volume of applications we receive, only applicants under consideration will be contacted.
Please note: Jerry.ai is only able to hire employees who currently reside in AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, IL, MA, NC, NJ, NV, NY, OR, TN, TX, UT, VA, or Ontario, Canada. We cannot accept applications from candidates residing elsewhere at this time.
Jerry.ai is proud to be an Equal Employment Opportunity employer. We prohibit discrimination based on race, religion, color, national origin, sex, pregnancy, reproductive health decisions or related medical conditions, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, veteran status, disability, genetic information, or other characteristics protected by applicable local, state or federal laws.
Jerry.ai is committed to providing reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities in our job application process. If you need assistance or an accommodation due to a disability, please contact us at recruiting@jerry.ai
The successful candidate's starting pay will fall within the pay range listed on this job posting, determined based on job-related factors including, but not limited to, skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. Ranges are market-dependent and may be modified in the future. In addition to base salary, the compensation may include opportunities for equity grants.
We offer a comprehensive benefits package to regular employees, including health, dental, and vision coverage, paid time off, paid parental leave, 401(K) plan with employer matching, and wellness benefits, among others. Equity opportunities may also be part of your total rewards package. Part-time, contract, or freelance roles may not be eligible for certain benefits.
About Jerry.ai
Your car and your home are your most expensive assets. And for most people, these aren't just purchases, they're the physical embodiment of the life you've worked hard to build. Yet the experience of owning them is stuck in the 90s. Every step of the journey - buying, insuring, maintaining, repairing, selling - is fragmented, complicated, and expensive.
Imagine having a trusted friend in your pocket who takes care of everything: they find you the right car or home at the right price, lock in the best insurance rate without you lifting a finger, remind you before that service appointment turns into an expensive repair or, worse, an accident, and help you sell at the best price when the time is right. That friend is Jerry.
Jerry is building the first AI agent to manage all your physical assets. We started with car insurance in 2019, became one of the top 3 brokers in the U.S., then added driving insights, diagnostics, and a repair marketplace.
We've reached 5M+ customers, raised $240M+, and have been profitable since 2024. We're now expanding into home, motorcycle, RV, and beyond.
We're fully remote with offices in Palo Alto, New York, Chicago, and Toronto.
