Insulation Manager information

What are some common challenges an insulation manager faces when coordinating project timelines and resources?

Insulation Managers often encounter challenges in balancing project deadlines with the availability of skilled labor and materials. Fluctuations in supply chains, last-minute design changes, or unexpected site conditions can require quick adjustments to schedules and resource allocations. Effective communication with contractors, suppliers, and other departments is essential to proactively address issues and keep projects on track. Staying organized and maintaining clear documentation helps ensure smooth coordination and successful project delivery.

What does an insulation manager do?

An Insulation Manager oversees the installation, maintenance, and quality control of insulation materials in buildings or industrial facilities. They are responsible for managing teams, ensuring projects meet safety and regulatory standards, and coordinating with clients and contractors. Our engineers and space scientists are on a mission to eliminate the connectivity gaps faced by today's five billion mobile subscribers and finally bring broadband to the billions who remain unconnected.
Position Overview
The Multi-Layer Insulation (MLI) Installation Manager is responsible for leading the installation and quality execution of thermal insulation systems critical to spacecraft performance. This role oversees a team of technicians and ensures all MLI installations meet stringent thermal, cleanliness, and contamination control requirements.
The MLI Installation Manager partners closely with engineering, manufacturing, and program management to deliver high-quality hardware on schedule. This position plays a key role in bridging design intent with hands-on execution in a fast-paced aerospace production environment.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage all MLI system installation activities across production and integration operations.
  • Supervise and develop a team of technician specialists, providing day-to-day direction and support.
  • Develop, refine, and standardize installation processes in collaboration with design and manufacturing engineering teams.
  • Ensure insulation systems meet thermal performance, cleanliness, and contamination control requirements.
  • Coordinate with engineering, manufacturing, and program management to meet build schedules and program milestones.
  • Implement and maintain quality assurance and inspection processes for MLI systems.
  • Monitor project progress, resource allocation, and team productivity to ensure efficient execution.
  • Identify and resolve technical challenges related to insulation performance, fit, or installation constraints.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, industry regulations, and company policies.
  • Support testing, verification, and validation activities for thermal insulation systems.
  • Provide hands-on training, mentorship, and technical guidance to team members.

Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science, or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.

Experience
  • 5-10+ years of experience in thermal systems, insulation systems, cryogenic systems, or aerospace manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated experience with multi-layer insulation (MLI) design and/or installation.
  • Experience leading technical teams, including direct supervision of 15 or more personnel.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and work instructions.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with spacecraft, launch vehicles, cryogenic tanks, or vacuum environments.
  • Familiarity with cleanroom operations and contamination control practices.
  • Experience working in aerospace or other advanced manufacturing environments.

Soft Skills
  • Strong leadership presence with the ability to motivate and develop technical teams.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a hands-on, solutions-oriented mindset.
  • Effective communicator across engineering, production, and program stakeholders.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement.

Technology Stack
  • Engineering drawing and CAD viewers.
  • Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) and/or ERP systems.
  • Quality management and inspection tools.
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Teams).

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work in manufacturing, cleanroom, and test environments.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and inspect hardware for extended periods.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs as needed.
  • Required use of PPE and adherence to cleanroom and contamination control protocols.

This role is critical to ensuring the integrity and performance of spacecraft thermal systems, directly contributing to mission success through high-quality execution and team leadership.
