Position Summary
Instructs students in theory, laboratory, and online topics in the Mechatronics field of study. Instructs students in laboratory procedures and exercises and assists in evaluation of student performance metrics and determination of student proficiency.
Requires knowledge of a body of information including the basics of electronics, mechanics, programmable logic controllers, motors, safety, manufacturing, process control, instrumentation, automation, robotics, hydraulics, pneumatics, precision measurement, CNC, and Industry 4.0. The employee uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently, but refers deviations, problems, and unfamiliar situations to the division chair for decision or guidance. Assists with course development and continual improvement of the program as necessary.
The work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, or reaching; and other activities requiring above average agility and dexterity. The work environment involves moderate risks requiring special safety precautions, such as working around moving parts or machines, high voltage, and possibly irritant chemicals, and may require the use of personal protective equipment.
Requires flexibility in scheduled work hours, as instructor schedules change every 8 weeks during the fall and spring terms, and at the beginning of the summer term. Work hours are typically between 7am and 8pm Monday - Thursday, but some Fridays and weekends may be required for special events or circumstances. These hours are subject to change based on growth and expansion of the program. Mechatronics instructors work 35-40 hours per week on campus and will be in contact with students 20-30 hours per week depending on other assigned duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
INSTRUCTOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Prepares course syllabi and instructional materials, delivers instruction, and evaluates and records student progress in assigned courses
2. Conducts instruction in a wide variety of settings and time frames to include day and evening at any instructional site
3. Employs appropriate teaching strategies in classroom and laboratory settings
4. Organizes and maintains instructional equipment as required
5. Explains, demonstrates, and ensures the safe use of tools, materials, and equipment in classroom and laboratory settings
6. Evaluates and advises College administration regarding textbooks and other instructional materials pertinent to the area of instruction
7. Orders required materials using established procedures
8. Advises students on class schedules and coursework for degree plan completion
9. Schedules and maintains office hours for student assistance
10. Promotes leadership and enrichment experiences through student organizations and/or other activities
11. Remains current on technological and employment trends pertinent to area of instruction
12. Maintains current industry certifications as required
13. Interacts with representatives from industry and agencies
14. Participates in College meetings, College committees, and professional development activities
15. Participates in curriculum development, evaluation, and revision
16. Recruits students for the program

1. Participates in the College's planning process
2. Works with the Dean of Instruction and Associate Dean of Administrative Services to develop, collect, analyze, and evaluate Student Learning Outcome (SLO) data
3. Supports college mission
4. Complies with all policies of the Alabama Community College System and the College
5. Performs other duties as assigned

MECHATRONICS DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Mechatronics instructors may be assigned to teach any combination of theory, online, or laboratory content by the Division Chair. Mechatronics instructors may be assigned as an instructor of record by the Division Chair after a period of time and demonstration of expertise in content and instructional ability. Duties include the following and other duties may be assigned.

1. Assist instructor of record (if not assigned) in weekly assessment of student progress
2. Inspect student work in progress and sign off on completion of student lab activities
3. Assist with midterm and final practical exams
4. Provide input to instructor of record (if not assigned) for calculation of student lab grades
5. Distributes tools, equipment, and supplies to students and ensures they are returned in working order following each lab activity
6. Receive and interpret lesson plan, directives, or other information regarding curriculum, lab activities, and demonstrations
7. Perform lab assignments in advance of classes to ensure all materials are accounted for, lab procedure can be followed as intended, and ensure ability to teach labs with detailed explanation and answer student questions
8. Assemble and set up equipment, supplies, tools, and other materials as needed
9. Provide guidance, advice, and instructional assistance to support student success, including providing tutoring in the subjects taught, basic mathematics, and reading comprehension
10. Ensure students complete lab activities in a timely fashion and adhere to safety procedures
11. Obtain and maintain technologically current knowledge in area of technical expertise and teaching methodology
12. Interface with business and industry, as required, to maintain a working relationship with business and industry in the local area

1. Maintain accurate records concerning student attendance, instructional objectives, learning outcomes, and submit reports required for the operation of an effective training program
2. Attend all scheduled faculty meetings
3. Become familiar with and adhere to policies, procedures, and regulations contained in the faculty/staff handbook
4. Participate in articulation and student recruiting efforts with public and private schools in the College's service area
5. Work well with and show respect to all College constituents
6. Perform other duties as assigned by the Division Chair, Dean of Instruction, or the President

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

1. Requires basic knowledge of electronics, mechanics, programmable logic controllers, motors, safety, manufacturing, process control, instrumentation, automation, robotics, hydraulics, pneumatics, precision measurement, and CNC.
2. Must have knowledge of and comply with College policies and procedures.
3. Ability to read, comprehend, and follow complex instructions, correspondence, and memos such as work orders, verbal and written instructions, warning labels, and safety procedures. Ability to read and write at a college level.
4. Requires ability to effectively present information orally and in writing in one-on-one and small group situations to students, faculty, staff, industry partners, and others. Must be able to multi-task and split time between a variety of activities simultaneously. Willingness to continually learn new subjects and obtain/maintain industrial certifications is required.
5. Ability to perform mathematics equal to a level of college trigonometry and perform calculations such as weight, area, volume, motor speed, torque, current, voltage, resistance, power, Boolean arithmetic, control system output, etc. Should have an understanding of binary, octal, hexadecimal, ASCII, BCD, and gray code numbering systems. Must be able to interpret and/or write logic statements and student computer programs.
6. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in problematic situations. Troubleshooting skills in programming, electronics, and mechanics are required.
7. Must have the ability to efficiently use computers, printers, telephones, calculators, copiers, and other standard office equipment. Must have ability to proficiently operate word processing, spreadsheet, and network applications. Must already have or be willing to obtain programming skills in the languages of ladder logic and/or G-code.
8. Requires the ability to safely use a variety of lab equipment including low and high voltage systems, precision measurement tools, electric motors, hydraulic pumps, pneumatic compressors, valves, robots, motor control systems, process control systems, programmable logic controllers, basic hand tools, and other equipment. Requires attention to detail and precision in operation of high-priced equipment that can be easily damaged if used improperly.
9. Must demonstrate professional and cooperative behaviors when assisting students, coworkers, customers, and others as needed. Must dress appropriately for situations that may differ on a daily basis, such as business meetings, lab activities, equipment maintenance, etc.
10. Requires discretion in dealing with sensitive or confidential matters.

Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Requires minimum ofAssociates Degreeand three years equivalent training/work experience/certification in mechatronics or a similar field such as electrical/electronics, manufacturing, mechanical, instrumentation, automation, machining, etc.
2. Bachelors ormastersdegree preferred.
3. Preference will be given to candidates with industrial experience and/orpreviousinstructional experience in a lab environment.
4. Preference will be given to candidates with specific experience in PLC programming, electronic circuits, process control, automation, instrumentation, electrical wiring, additive manufacturing, subtractive manufacturing, and/or mechanical systems.
