Job description

The Research and Administrative Facilities (RAF) department manages the operations and maintenance of research and administrative buildings, including both the Bastrop and Smithville campuses. The RAF team also includes parking and transportation, audio visual and event operations, as well as the exterior site operations, all of which support all the Houston campuses and properties.
The department has a team that is well-rounded, experienced in every craft, innovative, reliable, and collaborative. This day-shift role supports both administrative and school facilities and requires strong system-level thinking with expertise in loops, networks, and controls. The position demands a true subject matter expert who can ensure reliable facility operations across complex systems.
The ideal candidate will bring 5 years of experience as a subject matter expert in controls and electrical systems, with a proven track record of mentoring IT technicians, reviewing project materials, and supporting outage and shop response activities. They should have strong hands-on knowledge in controls, electrical systems, and healthcare owner-side project management, enabling them to effectively support complex projects in a clinical environment.
Must-have qualifications include demonstrated controls expertise, exposure to HVAC systems, strong leadership capabilities, and the ability to provide consistent project support across multidisciplinary teams. A Journeyman Electrician's License is a valuable plus that will further strengthen the candidate's technical foundation.
The salary range is $82,500 - $103,000 - $123,500.
Work schedule is Monday-Friday, 7am-3:30pm

SUMMARY
The primary purpose of the Senior Instrumentation Technician position is to provide subject matter expert providing highly skilled technical work involving electronic, electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic controls of typical state-of-the-art hospital facilities systems and equipment. Impacts the installation, maintenance and repair of Institutional electronic, electrical, mechanical and pneumatic controls and equipment .
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Reads, draws and interprets electrical, pneumatic, mechanical and heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) schematics, one line diagrams and control sequence of operations. Programs microprocessors for initial commissioning, tune of control loops and calibration of analog inputs. Performs functions on live circuits and in operating controls enclosures. May install, troubleshoot and repair 120, 208, 240 and 480 volt
controls and equipment per NEC guidelines. Coordinates and prioritizes the workflow of technicians. Investigates outages. Participates in the development of the "Owners Design Guidelines", project design phases and review processes. Inspects contracted instrumentation work to ensure repairs and installations are compliant. Functions as a point of contact for vendors. Prepares and submits reports. Participates in process improvement initiatives. May precept staff.
JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
Maintain Facility appearance, Functionality and Safety
•Knowledge of typical HVAC system control strategies.
•Assist with the repair/calibrate HVAC systems to include air handling units, fan coil units, terminal boxes, dampers, thermostats, sensors, control valves, and associated HVAC equipment.
•Program microprocessors for initial commissioning and tune operating controls.
•Read and interpret HVAC, mechanical, electronic, and electrical schematics, blueprints, and floor plans.
•Keep other instrumentation and crafts informed with the knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the job.
•Quickly respond to client "Dispatch" work order requests for a variety of tasks. Disable malfunctioning equipment.
•Disable malfunctioning equipment.
Reduce Outside Contractor Costs
•Keep up to date on the knowledge of the National Electrical Code for electrical installations.
•Requisition material. Skilled in practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment of electronic technician trade.
Other duties as assigned
• Provide lead support to the Utilities Operations Superintendent and/or Supervisor, Physical Plant's Superintendent in their absence.
• Coordinate all work performed by other shops, which require a basic knowledge of overall physical plant operations when, requested by Physical Plant Utilities Operations Superintendent, Supervisor, or Manager.
•The employee may be expected to be part of an on-call group and when assigned this responsibility will be compensated for that time. When on-call, the employee must be available and be able to respond in accordance to policy. Periods of alert when Emergency Conditions may be expected are not considered on-call.

EDUCATION
  • Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Preferred: Associate's Degree Electronics or related field.

WORK EXPERIENCE
  • Required: Eight years Electronic, building automated systems and pneumatic controls experience to include two years of electrical experience. or
  • Required: Six years Electronic, building automated systems and pneumatic controls experience to include one year of electrical experience with Journeyman Electrician's license.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Preferred: JRNY-E - Journeyman Electrician Upon Hire
