What is an instrumentation helper?

Instrumentation Helpers assist instrumentation technicians and engineers with the installation, maintenance, and repair of instruments and control systems used in industrial settings. Their duties often include running wires, assembling parts, calibrating equipment, and ensuring tools and materials are available for projects. They work under supervision and play a vital role in ensuring that measuring and control devices function properly, which is crucial for safety and efficiency. This entry-level position is a great starting point for a career in industrial instrumentation.

What are the typical responsibilities of an instrumentation helper during a project installation phase?

During a project installation phase, an Instrumentation Helper typically assists in mounting and wiring instruments, running conduit and cable trays, and supporting senior technicians with calibrating and testing equipment. The role often involves reading basic schematics, using hand tools, and ensuring that all installations comply with safety standards. Instrumentation Helpers also help with organizing and maintaining tools, cleaning work areas, and may be asked to assist with troubleshooting under supervision. This hands-on experience is valuable for learning industry best practices and advancing within instrumentation roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an instrumentation helper, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Instrumentation Helper, you need basic knowledge of instrumentation and electrical systems, manual dexterity, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with hand tools, measurement devices, and safety protocols is important, and OSHA or similar safety certifications are often beneficial. Strong teamwork, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn help individuals excel in this support role. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate assistance to technicians, maintain safety standards, and contribute to the smooth operation of industrial processes.

What is the difference between Instrumentation Helper vs Instrument Technician?

AspectInstrumentation HelperInstrument Technician
CertificationsBasic safety and entry-level certificationsAdvanced certifications like ISA certifications or technical diplomas
Work EnvironmentAssists in installation, maintenance, and repair under supervisionPerforms troubleshooting, calibration, and repair independently
Job ResponsibilitiesSupports instrument installation and basic maintenanceExecutes detailed diagnostics, calibration, and complex repairs

Instrumentation Helpers typically assist Instrument Technicians by performing basic tasks and supporting installation and maintenance. Instrument Technicians have more advanced skills, certifications, and responsibilities, including troubleshooting and calibration. Both roles are essential in industrial settings, but the Instrument Technician role requires more technical expertise and experience.

Is it hard to get into instrumentation helper?

Getting into an instrumentation helper position typically requires basic technical skills, such as understanding of electrical or mechanical systems, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Some employers may prefer candidates with relevant certifications or experience working with tools and equipment in industrial environments, but entry-level roles are generally accessible with proper training and a willingness to learn.

Responsibilities
Role Overview
We are seeking an AI Software Solutions Engineer to join our Digital and Photonics Software R&D team. In this role you will develop and integrate software that brings AI-powered capabilities into digital measurement instrument products. The position calls for solid software engineering skills and hands-on knowledge of Digital and Photonics measurements, together with a strong interest in applying Generative AI and agentic (multi-agent) techniques. Working independently on defined assignments and alongside senior engineers and the Solutions Architect, you will help deliver production-ready features for these products.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering and Delivery
  • Apply Digital and Photonics measurement domain knowledge to design, build, test, and debug software features for products such as sampling and realtime oscilloscopes, BERTs, and AWGs.
  • Determine and develop approaches to assigned features and components, working independently to deliver reliable, well-tested, maintainable software through the full development lifecycle.
  • Implement AI-enabled data flows and features defined by the Solutions Architect and senior engineers - which could include ingestion, preprocessing, feature extraction, model inference, and post-processing - ensuring data integrity and traceability.
  • Contribute to solution and component design reviews, applying software design patterns, performance optimization, and maintainability best practices.
  • Use Git and CI/CD pipelines and write automated tests to ensure quality and repeatable delivery.

Applied AI
  • Learn and apply Generative AI and agentic techniques - prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), tool/function calling, and multi-step reasoning - to implement product features under the direction of the Solutions Architect and senior engineers.
  • Help evaluate AI components, models, and libraries and integrate the selected approaches into product software.

Team Member
  • Work as a contributing member of a team of Digital and Photonics Measurement domain experts and AI engineers; help plan, estimate, and track your own tasks to meet milestones.
  • Participate in a culture of experimentation, rigorous AI evaluation, and responsible AI development.

Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Coordinate with Product Management, QA, and validation to clarify requirements and ensure features are reliable, explainable, and auditable.
  • Communicate progress, risks, and technical questions clearly to your team and the Project Manager.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Data Science, or a related field, and typically 4-5 years of relevant software development experience.
  • Working knowledge of, or hands-on exposure to, Digital and Photonics measurement instruments (e.g., oscilloscopes, BERTs, AWGs) - or a strong foundation in a closely related measurement or signal-processing domain with the ability to ramp quickly.
  • Proficiency in one or more modern software languages such as C++, C#, Python, Rust, or Java.
  • Experience with Git and CI/CD pipeline workflows.
  • Solid grounding in software design patterns, testing, and debugging, with the ability to work independently on defined assignments.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering software components into production or product environments.
  • Familiarity with - and a strong desire to learn - how AI-powered software is built (e.g., retrieval-augmented generation and agentic techniques).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience developing instrument, embedded, or real-time software, including hardware/software integration or signal-processing pipelines.
  • Hands-on exposure to AI/ML libraries or agentic frameworks such as LangGraph, AutoGen, CrewAI, Semantic Kernel, or similar orchestration toolkits.
  • Exposure to deploying AI/ML models on edge or embedded platforms.
  • Familiarity with responsible AI practices and explainability tooling (e.g., SHAP, LIME).
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across functions.
