Instrumentation Controls Designer information

What is an instrumentation controls designer?

Instrumentation Controls Designers are professionals who design and develop systems that monitor and control engineering processes, usually in industrial settings such as manufacturing plants, oil and gas facilities, or power stations. They create layouts and specify the types of instruments and control devices needed to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operation. Their work involves interpreting engineering blueprints, selecting appropriate sensors and controllers, and preparing detailed drawings for installation. They also collaborate with engineers and technicians to ensure that systems meet operational requirements and comply with industry standards.

How does an instrumentation controls designer typically collaborate with engineers and other team members during a project?

Instrumentation Controls Designers work closely with electrical, mechanical, and process engineers throughout all phases of a project. They are responsible for translating engineering requirements into detailed control system designs and schematics. Regular team meetings and design reviews ensure alignment on technical specifications, while ongoing communication with project managers and field personnel helps address challenges during installation and commissioning. Collaboration is key to ensuring that all control systems meet safety, quality, and performance standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an instrumentation controls designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Instrumentation Controls Designer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, instrumentation principles, and process control, often supported by a relevant degree or diploma. Proficiency with design software such as AutoCAD, PLC programming, and familiarity with industry standards like ISA are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set standout professionals apart in this role. These skills are crucial for designing reliable, safe, and efficient control systems that meet project and regulatory requirements.

Job description

TerraPower is a nuclear technology company based in Bellevue, Washington. At its core, the company is working to raise living standards globally through a more affordable, secure, and environmentally friendly form of nuclear energy along with innovations in medical isotopes to improve human health. In 2006, TerraPower originated with Bill Gates and a group of like-minded visionaries who evaluated the fundamental challenges to raising living standards around the world. They recognized energy access was crucial to the health and economic well-being of communities and decided that the private sector needed to take action and create energy sources that would advance global energy deployment. TerraPower's mission is to be a world leader in new nuclear technologies, while developing innovators and future leaders in the nuclear field. As a result, the company's activities in the fields of nuclear energy and related sciences are yielding significant innovations in the safety and economics of nuclear power, hybrid energy and medical applications - all for significant human health benefits."

TerraPower is seeking to hire highly motivated and forward-thinking professionals who are interested in focusing on advanced nuclear reactor research and development and influencing change within the nuclear power landscape and bringing forward the critical production of medical isotopes. TerraPower is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We do not discriminate in hiring on the basis of sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, color, religious creed, national origin, physical or mental disability, protected Veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state, or local law.ย

Senior Engineer, Instrumentation & Controls - Test & Fill Facility

The Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineer is responsible for the integration, commissioning, and support of I&C systems for the Natrium Test & Fill Facility. This role will develop and maintain the control and monitoring systems used to test, condition, and transfer sodium and other media in support of the Natrium reactor program.

The I&C Engineer works closely with mechanical, systems, nuclear safety, and operations teams, as well as external suppliers, to ensure that facility I&C systems are safe, reliable, compliant with applicable codes and standards, and aligned with TerraPower's overall Natrium design.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering

  • Implement and maintain I&C system designs for the Test & Fill Facility, including architecture, hardware, software, and networking.
  • Maintain design documentation: System Requirements Documents, System Design Descriptions, Interface Control Documents, control logic narratives, loop diagrams, and instrument datasheets.
  • Ensure instruments, valves, transmitters, analyzers, and control system hardware to meet process, environmental, and safety requirements.
  • Develop control strategies and logic for process control, interlocks, alarms, and safety-related functions as applicable to the facility.
  • Support development and maintenance of PFDs, P&IDs, control narratives, cause-and-effect diagrams, and I/O lists.

Implementation, Integration & Commissioning

  • Develop test procedures and support Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), Site Acceptance Tests (SATs), and integrated system testing for I&C systems.
  • Support installation, configuration, and troubleshooting of PLC/DCS hardware, I/O modules, field instruments, and related networking equipment.
  • Participate in commissioning, startup, and performance testing of the Test & Fill Facility, including tuning and optimization of control loops.
  • Provide technical support to resolve field issues during construction, checkout, and operations.
