Overview

There are three divisions in the instructor staff: 1) Water Safety Instructors (GAC swim lessons) and Water Fitness Instructors (fitness classes) and 3) GAC and Guilford County Learn To Swim Instructor (Water Safety Instructors for Guilford County Learn to Swim report to the GCLTS Coordinator).

As a Water Safety Instructor (WSI), you will play a crucial role in teaching individuals of all ages essential water safety skills and swimming techniques. Your primary responsibility is to ensure the safety of participants while imparting knowledge and fostering confidence in and around aquatic environments. This position is responsible for teaching and serving as deck coordinator for all GAC programming-including group, private, and adaptive lessons. Duties include training and developing staff as a lead instructor and assisting with the Guilford County Schools 2nd Grade Learn to Swim Program as needed. This position requires holding numerous water safety certifications. 

This role requires strong communication skills, patience, and a genuine passion for promoting water safety and swimming proficiency. A Water Safety Instructor plays a vital role in empowering individuals to enjoy the water safely and confidently.

This role will pay an hourly rate of $16.00-$18.00

Responsibilities
  • Teach and execute GAC-related swim lessons-group, private, and adaptive.
  • Operate as deck coordinator when not teaching to notify parents of deck changes/requirements. Adapt at the front desk to help with swim lesson registration and questions.
  • Create and track attendance reports and assessment cards for GAC programming.
  • Act as a lead instructor to mentor younger staff.
  • Assist with Guilford County Schools' 2nd Grade Learn to Swim Program as deck coordinator or instructor at the GAC or off-site locations.
  • Assist with instructor recruitment, retention, and staff trainings.
  • Teach WSI and LG classes if applicable.
  • Performs other related duties as requested.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D preferred.
  • 1 to 3 years of related experience teaching.
  • Must complete a recognized Water Safety Instructor certification course offered by organizations such as the American Red Cross, the YMCA, or the Royal Life Saving Society. These courses typically include both classroom instruction and practical training in teaching swimming and water safety.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification: Many training programs require candidates to hold current certifications in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid, as these skills are essential for responding to emergencies in aquatic environments.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in swimming skills, including various strokes (such as freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly) and water safety techniques. Specific skill requirements may vary depending on the training program or certifying organization.
