What is an instructional designer?

Instructional designers are professionals who create educational experiences and materials, such as courses, training programs, and learning modules. They use principles of learning theory, instructional technology, and curriculum development to design effective and engaging instruction for various audiences. Instructional designers often work in education, corporate training, healthcare, and other industries to help learners achieve specific goals and outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an instructional designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Instructional Designer, you generally need expertise in curriculum development, learning theory, and instructional methodologies, often supported by a degree in education, instructional design, or a related field. Familiarity with e-learning authoring tools (such as Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate), Learning Management Systems (LMS), and sometimes certifications like ATD or CPLP are common requirements. Strong project management, creativity, and communication skills help you collaborate with subject matter experts and engage diverse learners. These skills ensure instructional materials are effective, engaging, and aligned with learning objectives, driving successful educational outcomes.

What are some common challenges instructional designers face when collaborating with subject matter experts (SMEs)?

Instructional Designers often work closely with subject matter experts (SMEs) to gather and translate complex content into engaging, effective learning materials. A common challenge is bridging the gap between an SME's deep technical knowledge and the learners' needs or prior knowledge level. Balancing accuracy with clarity and accessibility can require negotiation and creative problem-solving. Building strong communication skills and fostering a collaborative relationship with SMEs helps ensure that learning objectives are met while maintaining content quality and learner engagement.

Join AmeriCorps EXL in beautiful Napa, California and spend your year supporting local students while building real-world skills, professional connections, and experience that can strengthen your next step.
This opportunity is especially well suited for Napa-area residents, college students, recent graduates, aspiring educators, and anyone looking for purposeful part-time service while continuing school, work, or other professional goals.

  • Some evenings, weekends, trainings, or additional service events may be required to successfully complete the 900-hour contractual service requirement
  • Winter Break Intercession programming is mandatory

Members are generally not expected to serve when their assigned school site is closed, according to the district-specific school calendar, with the exception of required programming and AmeriCorps service events.
Service is completed in person, and Members must live within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned Napa school site.
What You'll Do
AmeriCorps EXL Members serve within the Napa Expanded Learning Program and/or ACE After School Program, helping students grow academically, socially, and emotionally.
Your service may include a combination of the following:

  • Use provided curriculum to develop and implement engaging mentoring activities
  • Help students strengthen confidence, belonging, and connection to school
Expanded Learning & Enrichment
AmeriCorps EXL Members are not traditional after-school teachers or childcare staff. Instead, Members serve as enrichment and engagement leaders who help create meaningful, hands-on experiences for students.
Each Member may be assigned to an enrichment track based on program needs and personal interests, including:
  • Arts & Creative Expression
  • Sports & Athletics
