Facilities Maintenance Mechanic Apprentice - A34A0

The Boeing Company has an exciting opportunity, through our IAM/Boeing Joint Apprenticeship Program, for Facilities Maintenance Mechanic Apprentice in the Puget Sound region in Washington State!

This comprehensive 5-year training program consists of 10,000 hours of paid on-the-job training and essential classroom education, designed to equip you with the skills needed to excel. The program begins with a 20% probationary period, allowing you to acclimate to the role while gaining valuable hands-on experience. You will attend school for at least 144 unpaid hours per school year (four hours each week), registered through a local Community and Technical College. Your wages as an apprentice will be defined in Article 17 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the International Association of Machinists District 751 and The Boeing Company, with progression to a higher wage step for every 1,000 hours of recorded on-the-job training until completion. Upon graduation, you will be placed in the target job at the maximum rate and receive a journey-worker certificate and card recognized worldwide.

As a Facilities Maintenance Mechanic Apprentice, you will learn how to be an: integral piece in to maintaining and enhancing the vital plumbing and mechanical systems that support our facility's operations. Your expertise will ensure that complex systems-from steam equipment to pneumatic controls-are installed, maintained, and optimized to meet the evolving needs of the plant. You will have the opportunity to apply and develop technical skills in diagnosing system issues, implementing preventative maintenance, and improving system reliability. Your attention to detail will be essential as you perform inspections, follow safety protocols, and collaborate with engineering and operations teams to incorporate necessary changes. This role allows you to make a significant impact on our operations, ensuring that all work is completed safely and efficiently.

Applicant Eligibility: Applicants must not have previously enrolled in or completed an IAM/Boeing Joint Apprenticeship program.

Assessment and Course Completion: For English and/or math assessments, your assessment score and the corresponding course placement results (course number and title).

Proficiency in math and English must be verified through one of the following:

  • Completion of English 90 (or higher) with a grade C or better and

  • Completion of Intermediate Algebra (or higher) within the last 5 years, with a grade C or better OR

  • Completion of a college English and math assessment with results and placement into English 90 (or higher) and/or

  • Completion of a college math assessment with results and placement into Intermediate Algebra (or higher)

Qualification for the Apprenticeship: You can meet the qualifications through one of the following methods, which will be verified via your resume, work history, and transcripts:

Vocational Courses:

  • Basic Blueprint Reading or equivalent

  • Basic Precision Measuring Tools or equivalent

Relevant Work Experience: A minimum of one year of work experience in a similar field, such as:

  • Maintenance Technician (facility or plant)

  • Building/Facilities Maintenance Worker

  • Plumbing /Pipefitting Assistant or Helper

Position Responsibilities

  • Layout, construct, install, modify, and rebuild plant facilities plumbing systems including air, gas, water, drain lines, sprinkler systems, gasoline pumps, steam equipment, pumps, pneumatic controls, valves, and related components.

  • Diagnose, test, repair, adjust, and maintain plumbing and mechanical systems to ensure proper operation and compliance with codes and specifications.

  • Perform preventative maintenance inspections and routine plumbing tasks, including high-pressure steam system plumbing and pressure valve adjustments.

  • Interpret and work in conformance with codes, ordinances, blueprints, sketches, specifications, and verbal instructions.

  • Coordinate, assign, and prioritize work assignments based on job requirements and shop procedures.

  • Troubleshoot problems, develop resolution plans, and provide technical assistance and training to other plumbers as needed.

  • Obtain, review, and utilize drawings, schematics, specifications, and codes to plan and execute work.

  • Collaborate with engineering, procurement, other crafts, customers, vendors, and management to ensure smooth job execution and material availability.

  • Lock out, tag out, and try out equipment to ensure safety during maintenance and repair activities.

  • Install, repair, and certify backflow prevention equipment and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

  • Use appropriate tools and equipment, including hand tools, power tools, and lifts, to perform installation, repair, and maintenance tasks.

  • Assemble and attach pipes, valves, and plumbing components using mechanical, soldering, brazing, or other approved methods.

  • Handle, transfer, and dispose of hazardous materials safely and in accordance with regulatory procedures.

  • Operate monitoring equipment to verify system functionality and perform chemical and water testing as required.

  • Document work performed, maintain records, and communicate job status and handover information to the next shift.

Physical Demands and Potential Hazards:

  • Perform physical tasks that include lifting weights ranging from 10-15 lbs to 15-35 lbs.

  • Engage in various movements such as reaching, handling, turning, twisting, lifting, lowering, climbing, balancing, bending, kneeling, crouching, and squatting.

  • Work in environments that may involve contact with metals, solvents, and coolants.

  • Operate in proximity to moving parts and tools, sharp cutters, and potential slipping hazards.

  • Adapt to varying noise levels and atmospheric conditions.

  • Utilize personal safety gear to protect face/eyes, hands/arms, and feet while performing job duties.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a "US Person" as defined by 22 C.F.R. 120.62 is required. "US Person" includes U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Basic Qualifications:
