POSITION TITLE: Dance Instructor I / Program Aide 
DEPARTMENT: Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center Kroc Center Hawaii
SUPERVISOR: Creative Arts and Education Manager
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt, Hourly
CLASSIFICATION: Part Time, Hours vary to include weekends as needed

PAY RATES:

  • Program Aide- non-teaching duties: $16.00 per hour
  • Dance Instructor - actual instruction (teaching) duties: $20.00-$29.00 per hour

POSITION SUMMARY: Dance Instructor I is an entry-level position responsible for leading and assisting in basic dance instruction while supporting a safe, engaging, and inclusive environment for youth and community participants. This role combines instructional support, classroom management, and youth development responsibilities, with a strong emphasis on participant engagement, safety and well-being.

This position will have a deep commitment to the mission of The Salvation Army, which will be evident in his or her professional life and the way he or she represents The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in the community.

 REQUIREMENTS:

  • 3-5 years of dance and/or theater experience
  • Experience and/or interest in working with children ages 3 and up
  • Ability to demonstrate basic dance techniques and concepts
  • Ability to lead and assist group/class activities
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal communication, and customer service skills
  • Demonstrated ability to interact positively with diverse populations
  • Must have a genuine holistic concern for youth development, including their spiritual, emotional, social, intellectual, and physical well-being

Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be accepted.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience assisting instructors, program leaders, or youth coordinators
  • Experience working with parents, volunteers, and community members
  • Previous involvement in organized programs
  • Experience supervising children in educational or recreational settings

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Lead and assist in teaching dance classes as assigned, including classroom management and supervision
  • Support implementation of lesson plans developed by senior instructors
  • Demonstrate basic movements, exercises, and choreography, and assist students individually or in small groups to improve skills
  • Help prepare students for performances, recitals, and events
  • Create a positive, fun, and inclusive learning environment; greet and welcome participants and orient new students and parents to class procedures regularly and as needed.
  • Build positive relationships with students, encourage participation, and provide support as needed during classes and programs
  • Handle minor disputes or concerns professionally and calmly, escalating when appropriate
  • Set up and break down classrooms and instructional spaces; maintain organization and cleanliness of equipment and storage areas
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and assist with reporting and administrative tasks
  • Support coordination and execution of events, performances, outreach activities, and assist at off-site programs, rehearsals, or performances as needed
  • Provide excellent customer service to participants and families; communicate clearly and respectfully with students, parents, volunteers, and staff
  • Uphold a welcoming environment aligned with the Kroc Center Hawaii mission
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance and work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Attend required staff meetings and training

MENTAL DEMANDS:

This position requires the ability to interact with co-workers and the public in a positive, professional manner in conformity with The Salvation Army Mission Statement. Must be able to work with people of a diverse background and circumstances. The work will be in a fast-paced environment, work under stressful conditions and must maintain poise under pressure. The position must manage and prioritize multiple projects in an organized and efficient manner to meet tight deadlines. Must respond to crisis situations in a calm and effective manner and must be able to work with limited supervision, and work in a team setting with other professionals.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The position requires sitting, stooping, kneeling, bending, standing, walking, use of vision, pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying 25-50 pounds and occasionally more than 50 pounds with assistance.

EQUIPMENT NEEDS:

Equipment used includes general office equipment such as computers, photocopiers, scanners, printers, fax machines, telephone (office and cell), video projectors, sound-systems, microphones, audio-visual and lighting equipment, 10-key calculator. 

CLEARANCES:

The candidate chosen for this position will be required to pass a criminal history information check. Conviction of a crime will not automatically preclude employment. The circumstances involved in the conviction(s) will be considered.
