POSITION SUMMARY:

The Quality Inspector Manager will be an integral part of the SME Quality System. This individual will manage all quality activities ensuring the correct personnel, systems, and regulations are followed for each job, as well as the SME Quality Management System. This will include light to intermediate structural steel, miscellaneous steel, architectural ferrous and nonferrous materials, NDT, and coatings inspection. This position may be required to travel.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Review the contracts and specifications for each project.
  • Develop a project-specific QC Plan for each project.
  • Attend meetings to kick off and drawing reviews for each project.
  • Attend production meetings as required.
  • Manage the AISC Certification and other Jurisdictional qualifications relating to the facility. Including but not limited to LADBS, CCDBS, COP, AWS, etc.
  • Perform Annual Internal Audit
  • Manage welding operator qualifications, testing, WQTR's and continuity.
  • Manage shop inspector personnel counts and training.
  • Ensure projects receive the correct resources, including personnel and equipment.
  • Visit job sites and perform inspections as needed and where required.
  • Manage and communicate the needs for welding procedures and assist in developing PQR's where needed.
  • Ensure reports and documentation are completed and filed appropriately, in a timely manner.
  • Attend weekly sector meetings.
  • Attending Quarterly QC Manager meetings.
  • Report to the QA/QC Director weekly on needs, issues, and general information.
  • Interface with third-party inspectors as needed manage needs and request inspections.
  • Manage Non-conformances, and work with superintendents/shop foreman to resolve issues.
  • Interface with SME Safety Professionals as needed.
  • Write procedures when needed.
  • Oversee NDT, bolting, coatings and welding procedures are being implemented.
  • Manage QC reporting.
  • Maintain equipment and calibration log when appropriate.
  • Manage supplies and consumables.
  • Evaluate shop QCI performance
  • Manage facility quality certifications and audits.
  • Perform assigned duties within the requirements of the project specifications, applicable codes, and standards as defined in contract documents and the SME Quality Management System.
  • Work overtime, Weekends, or shift changes, and different locations where needed and assigned.
  • Paying close attention to detail for inspections, drawing reviews, and compliance with the final product.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Attend production meetings as needed.
  • Manage QCI log and QC organization charts.

QUALIFICATIONS: Must be able to perform each essential duty daily.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 5 years' experience in working with iron or structural steel inspection.
  • AWS CWI or similar certification required - formally supports welder qualification testing.
  • AWS D1.1, structural steel experience and/or experience with AISC preferred.
  • NDT Level II (preferred).
  • Ability to understand the working mechanisms of tools and machinery to be used.
  • Ability to do simple math and/or algebraic formulas as deemed necessary by work type.
  • Must be dependable, reliable, and mature enough to handle equipment in a safe sensible manner and complete work assignments in a timely, professional manner.
  • Stay current with codes, standards and contract documents.
  • Performs additional duties assigned in support of operational goals.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 65 pounds occasionally.
  • Must be able to stand, kneel, bend, twist, and reach for extended periods.
  • Physically fit to work in an industrial environment and tolerate exposure to varying physical conditions.
  • Must be able to work extended hours when necessary.
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to operate tools, equipment, and safety devices.
  • Tolerance to loud noises, vibrations, dust, heat, and fumes within a fabrication shop environment.
  • Ability to wear required PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) includes safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed boots, high visibility clothing, and hearing protection.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Industrial warehouse and manufacturing environment with heavy machinery, and overhead cranes.
  • Strict adherence to safety procedures and use of PPE is mandatory at all times.
  • Frequent interaction with production staff, supervisors, safety personnel, and quality control teams.
  • Exposure to hot and cold temperatures, depending on seasonal conditions.
