Job description

Job Title: Tower - Mechanical Engineer - TPLJob Description

The Mechanical Engineer will support the development and validation of a CR900 fuel injector program for large mining truck diesel engines. Based primarily in Pontiac, IL, this role operates within a small, highly collaborative engineering team responsible for injector development, supplier validation, testing, issue resolution, and product support as the program transitions toward production in 2027. The position is highly hands-on and blends engineering, laboratory, testing, and project coordination activities, with a strong focus on validation, testing, root cause analysis, and supplier development rather than pure design work.

Responsibilities
  • Support fuel injection equipment design, development, assembly, and testing activities to ensure robust performance for large diesel engines.
  • Participate in validation of new injector components and suppliers to drive cost reduction and strengthen supply resiliency.
  • Coordinate validation plans, test activities, and supplier interactions through regular technical reviews and discussions.
  • Perform hands-on laboratory work including component measurement and inspection using appropriate tools and equipment.
  • Conduct microscope imaging and documentation of components and test samples to support detailed analysis and reporting.
  • Assemble and tear down injectors to evaluate component functionality, wear, and failure modes.
  • Execute functionality, durability, and validation testing on injector hardware and document results thoroughly.
  • Investigate and resolve product issues using structured problem-solving methods such as 8D and other root cause analysis techniques.
  • Collaborate closely with suppliers, manufacturing teams, and engine integration teams throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Support component and assembly documentation, including creating and updating models and drawings in Creo when required.
  • Analyze test results and generate clear recommendations to improve product performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Assist with field-return inspections and failure analysis as the injector program moves into production and real-world operation.
  • Work closely with test bench operators and technicians to plan, execute, and support ongoing testing activities.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts in product validation, testing processes, and supplier development.
  • Take ownership of assigned projects and drive them to completion with minimal supervision.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Strong hands-on mechanical aptitude and genuine interest in working directly with hardware and test equipment.
  • Experience using measurement and inspection equipment for precision component evaluation.
  • Knowledge of CAD software, preferably Creo, for creating and modifying component and assembly models and drawings.
  • Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) and its application to mechanical design and inspection.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to systematically diagnose and resolve technical issues.
  • Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and take ownership of assigned projects from concept through validation.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to present technical information clearly and collaborate with suppliers and cross-functional teams.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Internship, co-op, or professional experience in engineering, testing, or product development in an industrial or automotive context.
  • Experience with fuel systems, engine systems, or diesel engine applications.
  • Validation or testing experience in a laboratory or manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with root cause analysis and structured problem-solving methodologies such as 8D.
  • Basic statistical analysis and data interpretation skills to support test result evaluation and decision-making.
  • Experience supporting supplier development, quality investigations, or product validation activities.
  • Familiarity with mechatronics, controls, sensors, PLCs, or related technologies.
  • Personal automotive projects, engine-related hobbies, or practical troubleshooting experience that demonstrate mechanical curiosity and initiative.
  • Self-motivated, mechanically inclined mindset with a desire to develop deep expertise in product development and validation.
  • Interest in working on fuel systems for demanding mining applications and contributing to the reliability of heavy-duty equipment.
Work Environment

The role is primarily based in Pontiac, IL and is ideal for an engineer who enjoys spending time in the lab and working directly with hardware rather than sitting behind a desk all day. You will be part of a small, highly collaborative engineering team that values hands-on experimentation, open communication, and shared problem-solving. The environment offers significant exposure to product development, supplier collaboration, testing, and troubleshooting, with frequent interaction with test benches, laboratory measurement equipment, and injector hardware. While occasional CAD work may be required, the position is mainly focused on product validation, testing and analysis, supplier development, hands-on laboratory activities, and issue resolution with continuous improvement. The culture emphasizes practical engineering, ownership of projects, and close cooperation with technicians, suppliers, manufacturing, and engine integration teams.
