Job description

Job Summary
The Department of Bioengineering, Civil Engineering, and Environmental Engineering at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) invites applicants for multiple open-rank faculty positions, starting January 2027. We seek individuals with enthusiasm for teaching and a desire to engage students in the classroom and laboratory on subjects primarily in civil and environmental engineering.
This is an open and broad search intended to attract a highly qualified pool of candidates. While areas of emphasis are listed below, applicants with expertise in related, emerging, or interdisciplinary areas of civil and environmental engineering are strongly encouraged to apply. Rank will be determined based on qualifications and experience. Areas of emphasis for these positions include the following:
Geotechnical Engineering (CEE-01): Expertise in geotechnical engineering, with preferred areas of expertise including foundation engineering, environmental geotechnics, soil-structure interaction, geohazard mitigation, sustainable geomaterials, and advanced in-situ and remote geotechnical site characterization.
Environmental Engineering (CEE-02): Expertise in environmental engineering, with preferred areas including wastewater treatment and reuse, nutrient and resource recovery, environmental biotechnology, and water quality monitoring and modeling using sensors, digital twins, and AI/ML for process optimization. Broader expertise in environmental systems, emerging contaminants, sustainability, and climate-resilient water infrastructure is also encouraged.
Infrastructure and Community Resilience (CEE-03): Expertise in civil engineering with preferred areas of expertise including infrastructure resilience, sustainable development, sustainable water management, disaster risk reduction, and resilient urban and coastal systems under changing environmental conditions. Applicants with expertise in related areas such as transportation systems, structural engineering, water resources engineering, environmental systems, and emerging smart city and data-driven infrastructure technologies are strongly encouraged to apply.

Job Description
Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Teaching: Teaches undergraduate and/or graduate civil and environmental engineering courses aligned with departmental needs, including advanced courses related to area of expertise.
  • Scholarship and Professional Development:
    • Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Full Professor: Establishes and maintains a program of externally peer-reviewed scholarship and/or creative activity appropriate to rank.
    • Instructor I/Instructor II/Instructor III: Demonstrates significant ongoing professional development and/or instructional scholarship activities appropriate to rank.
  • Service: Performs service within the university and the professional community.
  • Plans and teaches assigned courses.
  • Prepares syllabi, instruction materials, coordinates lectures, tests, and evaluates student work.
  • Maintains highest possible standards of classroom instruction.
  • Keeps abreast of new information and developments in field of instruction.
  • Assists with the development of curriculum.
  • Maintains professional skills through regular professional development, and other activities appropriate to higher education faculty.
  • Actively serves on university committees.
  • Actively participates in institutional meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Must work closely with the Department Chair and other faculty on assessment and evaluation tasks necessary for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accreditation.
  • The ability to work with and mentor student organizations, clubs, and competition teams.

Additional Job Description
Required Qualifications:
Assistant Professor / Associate Professor/Full Professor:
  • Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field of Engineering from an accredited institution or equivalent accreditation.
  • ABD candidates will be considered, provided the doctoral degree is conferred by the start date. If the selected candidate is ABD at the time of appointment, the position will be offered at the Lecturer level on a fixed-term contract until the degree is conferred.
  • Must possess a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in the discipline from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Experience and evidence appropriate to the desired rank

Instructor I/ Instructor II/ Instructor III:
  • Master's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field of Engineering from an accredited institution or equivalent accreditation.
  • Must possess a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in the discipline from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Successful candidates must be able to teach new and/or courses in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the undergraduate and graduate level.
  • Experience and evidence appropriate to the desired rank.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Expertise in civil and environmental engineering that complement departmental strengths and the Southwest Florida environment.
  • Professional registration, licensing or the ability to become licensed, or certifications related to the civil and environmental engineering discipline.
  • Preferred areas of expertise include sustainability and climate resilience of infrastructure systems, adaptive and resilient built and natural environments, advanced environmental engineering (e.g., emerging contaminants, resource recovery), artificial intelligence and machine learning applications for civil and environmental engineering, intelligent infrastructure (including digital twins, sensing, and autonomous monitoring), and data-driven methods to support design, and hazard mitigation across civil and environmental domains.
  • A rank-appropriate record of scholarly publication, externally funded research, or professional development activities.
  • Relevant filed experience in one or more of the above-listed areas is highly desirable.
  • Successful candidates must be able to teach new and/or existing courses in civil and environmental engineering, as well as in selected general engineering topics.

  • Knowledge and ability to use technology in various teaching modalities (e.g. Face-to-face, synchronous online or asynchronous online).
  • Ability to collaborate with stakeholders both within and outside the University in the development and delivery of instruction, resulting in improved student learning.
  • Ability to collaborate with related disciplines and to establish relationships internally as well as to successfully develop
  • relationships and interact with external industry partners and the southwest Florida community.
