Systems Operations Manager
Role Summary
Howard University Hospital is seeking a Systems Operations Manager to lead enterprise infrastructure operations supporting mission-critical clinical and administrative systems.
This role oversees the systems engineering team responsible for data center operations, virtualization platforms, storage systems, and hybrid cloud environments. The Manager ensures reliable, secure, and high-performance infrastructure that supports patient care, research, and hospital operations.
The Systems Operations Manager partners closely with Information Security, clinical technology teams, and senior IT leadership to maintain operational stability while advancing modernization and cloud adoption initiatives.
What You'll Do
  • Lead enterprise infrastructure operations including servers, operating systems, virtualization platforms, storage systems, and hybrid cloud environments.
  • Supervise Systems Engineers and infrastructure staff, including hiring, coaching, performance management, and workload distribution.
  • Ensure high availability and performance of mission-critical clinical and administrative systems.
  • Develop infrastructure modernization roadmaps and cloud adoption strategies.
  • Manage hybrid cloud environments including Azure, AWS, and VMware platforms.
  • Establish operational standards for monitoring, patch management, automation, and configuration control.
  • Oversee identity and access management systems including Active Directory, Azure AD, SSO, and MFA.
  • Lead disaster recovery, backup, and business continuity planning for critical hospital systems.
  • Partner with Information Security to implement cybersecurity controls and regulatory compliance frameworks.
  • Coordinate incident response for infrastructure outages impacting clinical systems and hospital operations.
  • Manage infrastructure lifecycle planning, capacity management, and budget forecasting.
  • Maintain system documentation, operational runbooks, and governance standards.
  • Manage infrastructure vendors and service contracts.
  • Report infrastructure performance metrics and strategic initiatives to senior IT leadership.

Required Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field required.
  • Master's degree in Information Systems, Healthcare Informatics, Business Administration, or related field preferred.

Experience
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in systems administration, infrastructure engineering, or enterprise operations.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • Experience in healthcare or hospital IT environments strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience managing hybrid cloud infrastructure and enterprise-scale systems.

Technical Skills
  • Advanced expertise in Windows and Linux enterprise environments.
  • Deep knowledge of virtualization technologies such as VMware and Hyper-V.
  • Strong knowledge of enterprise storage platforms including SAN and NAS.
  • Experience with cloud platforms including Azure and AWS.
  • Strong understanding of automation, scripting, and configuration management tools.
  • Experience with monitoring platforms, identity management, and ITSM frameworks.
  • Knowledge of healthcare regulatory standards including HIPAA and HITECH.
