Job Summary:

The Field Safety Manager is responsible for implementing and maintaining Bechtel's ESH programs across all project phases. This involves implementation of administrative and field related compliance per established industry practices, procedures, and regulatory and Bechtel requirements. The position requires practical application of occupational safety and related disciplines for managing safety and health aspects of the project. This role ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, contractual obligations, and Bechtel Core Processes, while fostering a proactive safety culture. The Field Safety Manager is responsible for ensuring field operations comply with regulatory standards, managing risks, preventing incidents, and promoting ongoing improvements to protect personnel, assets, and the environment. This role reports directly to the Project ESH Manager and oversees the Area ESH Leads within the designated geographic areas of the project. #LI-AE2

Major Responsibilities:
  • Establish, administer, and sustain a comprehensive safety and health program at the project level, or oversee a significant component of such a program, for large-scale or complex projects. This includes both technical and administrative responsibilities, as well as ensuring adherence to compliance requirements.
  • Assure that safety and health requirements are integrated in planning documents, design criteria, construction execution, commissioning and startup and operational plans, schedules, procurement, and subcontract documents.
  • Prepare technical and regulatory reports and research issues to support ESH program execution.
  • Provide technical support within the project's ESH team and to other project groups, so that safety and health requirements are integrated within project planning, design, construction planning, procurement, subcontracts, commissioning, and other project functions.
  • Work with other project-level functional leads (e.g., engineering, construction, commissioning and startup, subcontracts, procurement, project controls, document control) to assist them in addressing safety and health requirements in their work products and activities.
  • Monitor adherence to regulatory standards, contractual ESH obligations, and Bechtel's Life Critical Requirements (LCRs).
  • Emphasize and use risk assessment and Bechtel's ESH Management System to help achieve continual improvement of the ESH program.
  • Participate in ESH emergency preparedness planning and confirm investigation and resolution of safety incidents.
  • Evaluate incidents and ESH performance trends.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders, address their concerns, and collaborate with project leadership, subcontractors, and the client to achieve ESH objectives.
  • Supervise project-assigned safety and health personnel.
  • Participate in meetings with customer, project team members, and contractors/subcontractors to advise them of safety/health requirements.
  • Provide technical support and assistance to construction supervision and subcontractors in planning and executing field activities.
  • Conduct assessments and inspections of project activities to monitor ESH compliance with contractual commitments, laws and regulations, and Bechtel requirements.
  • Apply data analysis and trend information to improve focus and performance and prepare technical reports.
  • Facilitate support for ESH team members, inclusive of all ESH disciplines
Education and Experience Requirements:

A Master's degree in Safety Engineering, Occupational Health, or related discipline and 8 or more years of relevant experience; or a Bachelor of Science degree (or equivalent) in occupational safety, health, or a science-related discipline from an accredited university or college and 10 or more years of relevant experience; or an Associate's degree (or equivalent) in occupational safety, health, or a science-related field and 12 or more years of relevant experience; or 15 or more years of relevant safety or health experience

Required Knowledge and Skills:
  • Ability to research and comprehend organizational and regulatory requirements.
  • Proven track record in managing ESH programs for large-scale projects. Strong ability to lead teams, influence stakeholders, and drive safety culture.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for reporting and presenting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer applications for the preparation of presentations, effective data management, and report generation.
  • Proficiency in OSHA recordkeeping standards and the appropriate methodologies required for compliance.
  • In-depth knowledge of ESH regulations and construction related industry standards
  • Adaptable and able to work outdoors in a field environment under various weather conditions.
  • Ability to support multiple work shifts, as needed, and a wide range of tasks.
  • Willingness to travel and work at project sites as needed
  • Valid driver's license.

Additional Qualifications

  • Demonstrated interest, training, and experience in applied sciences.
  • Ability to work in multicultural, multidisciplinary environments.
  • Knowledge and experience with ISO 45001 Management System standards and certified as an ISO 45001 internal auditor.
  • Professional certification (e.g., ASP, OHST, CSP, CIH) or progress toward certification is highly desirable.
  • Broad technical knowledge, science skills, and technical writing abilities.
