What is an infrastructure manager?
What does an infrastructure manager do?
An infrastructure manager works with an organization’s IT department to plan, design, and implement the technology ecosystem. Your responsibilities in this career include a range of other tasks to prepare and maintain the IT infrastructure. Duties can involve working with either hardware, software, or both, depending on the size of the business. You can also specialize in a particular aspect of the network. Your primary goal is to guarantee the security and integrity of the system. Some infrastructure manager positions also focus on budget, periodic reviews, or negotiations with vendors.

What is the difference between Infrastructure Manager vs Network Engineer?
| Aspect | Infrastructure Manager | Network Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Certifications | ITIL, PMP, Cisco certifications | CCNA, CCNP, CompTIA Network+ |
| Work Environment | Oversees entire IT infrastructure, including servers, storage, and networks | Focuses on designing, implementing, and maintaining network systems |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Common in large enterprises, data centers, and IT service providers | Found in organizations needing network setup and support |
While both roles involve IT infrastructure, the Infrastructure Manager oversees the entire infrastructure ecosystem, including networks, servers, and storage, whereas the Network Engineer specializes specifically in network design, implementation, and troubleshooting. The Infrastructure Manager has broader responsibilities, often managing teams and strategic planning, while the Network Engineer focuses on network-specific tasks.

Job description
Title: Technical Engagement Manager for WIndows Infrastructure & Azure Cloud
Location: Tampa, FL
About the Role
XDuce is seeking a Technical Engagement Manager to lead infrastructure and cloud engagements for our growing mid-market and corporate client base.
This is a client-facing technical leadership role. You will own the technical direction and execution of infrastructure engagements; leading discovery, setting the solution approach, coordinating the engineering resources who do the build, and keeping demanding client stakeholders confident and informed from kickoff through closeout.
Your primary value is engagement leadership: translating business objectives into a workable technical plan, sequencing the work, pulling in the right specialists at the right time, and holding the line on scope, risk, and quality. You need enough depth to lead the room, challenge an approach, and be credible with senior engineers and client architects; but this is not a role where you personally design every environment or configure it yourself. What this role is not: This is not a dedicated cloud architect position, and it is not a hands-on build or support role. When an engagement requires deep, specialized design work, you will scope it and bring in a subject-matter specialist; your job is to know when that call is needed and to integrate their work into the engagement. This role sits alongside our Client Success function, which owns client health, onboarding, and ongoing service delivery. You own the technical direction and execution of project engagements.
Responsibilities
Engagement Leadership
Serve as the technical owner and primary technical point of contact for assigned client engagements.
Lead discovery sessions, technical workshops, roadmap presentations, and executive readouts.
Translate business objectives into a practical, sequenced technical plan.
Manage scope, timeline, and expectations with demanding stakeholders; including saying no well.
Identify risks early, escalate appropriately, and drive them to resolution.
Communicate clearly with both engineers and non-technical executives. Technical Direction
Set and defend the technical approach for infrastructure and cloud engagements.
Review and validate solution designs produced by internal engineers and outside specialists.
Recognize when an engagement requires deep specialist expertise, define that scope, and engage the right resource.
Guide engineering teams through complex or ambiguous technical decisions.
Ensure delivered solutions align with Microsoft and industry best practices.
Delivery & Growth
Coordinate multidisciplinary resources across infrastructure, cloud, networking, cybersecurity, and managed services.
Contribute to Statements of Work, estimates, and technical roadmaps.
Lead infrastructure modernization, Azure migrations, and hybrid cloud initiatives.
Surface follow-on project and consulting opportunities within active accounts.
Feed delivery learnings back into our internal standards and estimating models. Required Qualifications
10+ years in IT infrastructure, with progressive responsibility.
5+ years leading client-facing infrastructure or cloud engagements; consulting, MSP, or professional services environment.
Demonstrated ownership of multi-stakeholder technical projects from discovery through delivery.
Direct experience working with client executives (CIO, IT Director, Infrastructure and Security leadership).
Strong written and verbal communication; comfortable presenting and facilitating.
Sound judgment about when to go deep, when to delegate, and when to bring in a specialist. Technical Background
You should be conversant enough across the following to lead technical discussions, evaluate proposed designs, and estimate work credibly. Deep hands-on expertise in every area is not expected.
Core (working depth required)
Microsoft Azure; IaaS, networking, identity, migration patterns
Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Entra ID
Windows Server and Active Directory; hybrid identity
Virtualization (VMware and/or Hyper-V)
Enterprise networking fundamentals
Backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity Familiarity expected
Cloud migration planning and Azure landing zone concepts
Microsoft Intune and Microsoft Defender
Infrastructure security fundamentals
Storage technologies
Infrastructure automation concepts (PowerShell, Terraform, or Bicep) Nice to have
AWS or Google Cloud Platform exposure
Microsoft Sentinel
Regulated-industry delivery experience
Certifications
Certifications are a signal, not a gate; relevant delivery experience carries equal weight.
Helpful
Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104)
Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305)
ITIL Foundation
PMP or PMI-ACP
Also valued
Microsoft Certified: Azure Security Engineer Associate (AZ-500)
Microsoft Certified: Cybersecurity Architect Expert (SC-100)
AWS Certified Solutions Architect
CISSP, CCNP Enterprise, or VMware VCP What Success Looks Like
Clients trust you because you combine technical credibility with business judgment. You know when to dig into an architecture, when to step back and let engineers work, and when to pull an executive decision forward before it becomes a delay.
You stay composed under pressure, see problems coming, and give clients a straight answer even when it isn't the one they wanted. Engagements you run finish on scope, and the client comes back for the next one.
Why Join XDuce
XDuce is investing in the next phase of our Managed IT & Cybersecurity practice as we move further into mid-market and corporate accounts. This role carries real ownership: you will shape how we run engagements, mentor the engineers you work alongside, and directly influence the growth of the practice.
