Summary
IT Infrastructure Engineer III / Senior
 
At APS, this role helps keep Arizona's energy flowing by ensuring the technology behind our nonnuclear generation fleet is reliable, secure, and ready for the future. As an IT Infrastructure Engineer III or Senior, you'll support the systems that power renewable and fossil generation facilities, making sure operators have dependable tools to safely generate electricity every day. Your work directly supports APS's mission to deliver safe, reliable energy to the communities we serve across Arizona.

What Your Day Would Be Like:

  • Support and maintain SCADA and related infrastructure that enables renewable and fossil generation facilities to operate reliably
  • Partner with generation teams to troubleshoot issues, support applications, and improve system performance
  • Travel to generation sites to provide handson support and represent the IT team as a trusted technical partner
  • Work on infrastructure projects that strengthen security, reliability, and future readiness of generation systems
  • Participate in a 24x7x365 rotational support model to help ensure continuous operations (standard schedule M-F, 8-5)

Who We're Looking For:

  • Experience supporting IT infrastructure and applications in an operational or industrial environment
  • Knowledge of renewable generation systems (primary) and fossil generation systems (secondary)
  • Background working with SCADA or similar operational technology environments
  • Willingness and ability to travel to generation sites and serve as the "face" of the IT team

Minimum Requirements

IT Infrastructure Engineer III 

  • Bachelors' degree in Information Technology or related field
  • PLUS five (5) year of prior relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
  • Requires strong technical knowledge within a job area or system and basic knowledge across related technical areas

IT Infrastructure Engineer Senior

  • Bachelors' degree in Information Technology or related field
  • PLUS seven (7) year of prior relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
  • Requires in-depth level of technical knowledge within a job area and working knowledge of other technical areas

Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications:

  • Proficient in maintaining/troubleshooting SCADA human to machine interface (HMI) platforms with associated applications within renewable and fossil generation environments.
  • Troubleshooting; installing and repairing PC hardware and software; advanced design, maintenance and repair of servers; applying creative solutions to business problems to ensure business needs are most effectively met; advanced information system configuration management
  • Knowledge of all infrastructure technologies (compute, storage, networking, physical infrastructure, software, commercial off the shelf (COTS) and open source packages and solutions, virtual and cloud including IaaS, PaaS and SaaS); infrastructure management tools and monitoring tools; solution sizing for hardware/software platforms; industry standard security requirements and designs.
  • Knowledge of renewable and fossil generation plant equipment, including inverters, controllers, and tracking systems
  • Skilled in configuring and supporting industrial controlsystem communications using SEL, Modbus, DNP3, OPC and other protocols
  • Experience supporting battery management systems, including troubleshooting issues and interfacing with vendors
  • Experience providing network support, including troubleshooting, configuration, and performance monitoring
  • Proficient in server administration across virtualized and physical environments for both Windows and Linux systems. This includes assisting with the design of systems and ensuring architecture standards are met.
  • Handson experience managing and supporting Active Directory, including user/group administration and policy management
  • Ability to travel to generation facilities and corporate offices as needed to support operational and project activities
  • Ability to develop and write technical documentation; evaluate and test emerging technologies.
Major Accountabilities

1) Under general direction, build and maintain fossil and renewable generation human to machine interface (HMI) systems within a process control environment.

2) Drive restoration of HMI/SCADA systems impacting generation operations

3) Executes HMI lifecycle replacement and upgrade projects across the generation fleet

4) Interface with vendors for support and engineering of systems during projects and upgrades

5) Troubleshoot industrial communication protocols to ensure data flow within engineering and operating systems

6) Support Linux and other non-Windows devices within an energy management system (EMS) at renewable generation facilities

7) Provide higher level support to help desk personnel or other engineers/analysts with less experience

8) Participate in a rotating 24/7 on-call support schedule for mission-critical applications

9) May manage projects at this level, requiring responsibility for the delegation of work and the review of others' work products and engineering projects

10) Participates in business requirements meetings

11) Partners with technical architects to translate the architectural designs into operations 

12) Serve as primary on-site IT/OT representative for generation facilities

13) Acts as primary coordination point between Generation IT, Network Engineering, Cybersecurity, and plant operations

This position requires Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) access consistent with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards. The applicant considered for this role will be required to obtain and maintain CIP access for the duration of employment in this position. A full seven (7) year criminal history will be obtained through the pre-employment background check process (or, for current employees, through supplemental background check process) to fulfill the CIP access requirements. In addition, this position requires an additional background check every seven years to maintain access.

Home based: Home based employees primarily work from their home offices and come into an APS facility on an as-needed basis. 

  • Employees are expected to reside in Arizona (or New Mexico for Four Corners-based employees).  
  • Working from a home office requires adequate technology and an appropriate ergonomic set up.
