Description

Union Pacific Railroad Company seeks an Associate Project Engineer position in Omaha, NE. May telecommute up to 50% of work time.

This position is a technical position in the IT Department as part of the Career Path Process. The technical career path is for employees interested in an individual contributor role, who want to work with other team members to ensure a project's success. The main elements of the technical path include: 1) No direct reports, 2) Heavy technical skills, 3) Heavy teamwork, 4) Heavy client/customer contact, 5) Heavy daily planning and execution, 6) Creativity, and 7) Participation in interviewing process.

Position is located in the Systems Engineering group within the IT Department and will be a member of the Network Design team.

Position is responsible for supporting UP’s core IP infrastructure including the design, implementation, support, and administration of the network.

Accountabilities

• Investigate new networking technologies and understand impact to UP's IP network.
• Investigate, test, and deploy new router/switch software and hardware.
• Communicate with customers to understand networking requirements.
• Configure routers and switches per networking requirements.
• Perform network maintenance, and
• Will be available for Tier 4 support calls to troubleshoot the IP network.

Qualifications - Required

• A Bachelor Degree (foreign equivalent accepted) in Computer Science, Electronics/Electrical Engineering, Management Information Systems, or a related area of study.
• 4 years of experience troubleshooting IP networks utilizing the knowledge of the network technologies, services and protocols. Requires problem solving skills.
• 4 years of experience and Intermediate knowledge of network technologies, services and protocols: BGP, MPLS, OSPF, QoS, IPSEC VPN, ACLs, BGP, MPLS, OSPF, QoS, IPSEC VPN, ACLs, multicast, VXLAN, VRRP, Spine/Leaf architecture, DNS, DHCP, VRFs, OSI model. Understanding of how these are applied in a corporate IP network and how to use these features/technologies to provide desired IP network outcomes and reliability. Ability to provide recommendation and ideas in terms of design, implementation, support, and administration of the network.
• 4 years of experience with the ability to maintain, design and support IP monitoring environment. This includes the ability to utilize Wireshark packet capture & analysis to troubleshoot network or application issues.
• 4 years of experience with the ability to investigate, test, and deploy new router, switch, and load balancer software and hardware.
• 4 years of experience with the ability to independently configure routers and switches, load balancers per networking requirements.
• 4 years of experience with the ability to communicate with customers to understand requested requirements and generate configurations/designs accordingly to meet customer need while abiding by best practices for network and application reliability.
• 4 years of experience with the ability to independently review software release notes and provide recommendations for software versions and perform network maintenance and upgrades on Arista and Cisco network hardware.
• 4 years of experience with the ability to collaborate with coworkers to provide most effective network solutions.
• Must pass background check investigation and medical review.

This is a pay-for-performance program which administers annual salary adjustments, cash incentive bonuses and stock equity as determined by individual performance, company performance and program guidelines.
