What is an information technology undergraduate?

An Information Technology Undergraduate job is typically an internship or entry-level position designed for students pursuing a degree in IT or a related field. These roles provide hands-on experience in areas like technical support, software development, networking, or cybersecurity. Responsibilities may include troubleshooting issues, assisting with system maintenance, or working on small projects under supervision. This experience helps students apply their academic knowledge in a professional setting and gain practical skills for future IT careers.

What types of projects or tasks can information technology undergraduates expect to work on during their employment?

Information Technology Undergraduates often support teams with hands-on tasks such as troubleshooting hardware and software issues, developing simple coding solutions, or assisting in testing and maintaining IT systems. Depending on the company, you may also participate in network configuration, cybersecurity monitoring, data entry, or helping with user support and documentation. Collaborative work is common, so you'll likely engage with other IT professionals, participate in team meetings, and learn from senior mentors. This role provides the opportunity to gain practical experience and build foundational skills, which are valuable for future full-time IT positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the information technology undergraduate position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Information Technology Undergraduate, a strong foundation in computer science principles, problem-solving abilities, and familiarity with programming languages is essential, typically gained through formal education or relevant coursework. Exposure to common industry tools such as version control systems (e.g., Git), basic networking equipment, and productivity platforms, along with certifications like CompTIA IT Fundamentals, can be highly beneficial. Strong communication skills, eagerness to learn, and teamwork are important soft skills that help undergraduates stand out in collaborative environments. These competencies enable students to contribute effectively to IT projects, adapt to evolving technologies, and excel during internships or entry-level roles.

About the Role & Team

WEX's Information Security Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) team operates in a fast-paced, high-autonomy environment. We are looking for an energetic, curious, and collaborative Information Security Intern who is excited to explore how next-generation technologies-such as Generative AI and agentic workflows-are reshaping corporate defense and risk management.

In this role, you will gain hands-on exposure to enterprise security operations, risk frameworks, and regulatory compliance while actively researching and deploying AI tools to modernize security operations.

How You'll Make an Impact

  • Policy & Governance: Assist in updating enterprise information security policies and guidelines, including emerging governance frameworks for responsible AI deployment and data privacy.

  • Risk Management: Support third-party supply chain risk assessments, evaluating how vendors integrate AI capabilities and manage sub-processor risk.

  • Compliance & Auditing: Help track alignment with major industry frameworks (PCI DSS, NIST CSF, ISO 27001) and leverage automation tools to streamline audit evidence collection.

  • Security Culture & Training: Contribute to security awareness initiatives, incorporating topics on emerging threats, prompt injection, and safe usage of enterprise AI tools.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with IT, Legal, Procurement, and AI governance teams to integrate security and privacy controls into business initiatives.

Qualifications & Experience You'll Bring:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Cybersecurity, Information Security, Computer Science, Information Assurance, Data Science, or a related field.

  • Must have completed at least your Sophomore year by May 2027.

  • Basic understanding of risk management, IT architecture, operating systems, networking, and foundational cybersecurity principles.

Preferred Skills & Attributes:

  • AI Familiarity: Active interest or hands-on experience using Generative AI tools (e.g., Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude, GitHub Copilot) or understanding the basics of agentic AI frameworks and prompt engineering.

  • Analytical Thinking: Strong problem-solving skills and a desire to use technology to optimize manual processes.

  • Communication: Ability to explain complex technical and security concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Mindset: Proactive, adaptable, and enthusiastic about working with bleeding-edge technology in a collaborative environment.
