Overview

Under the supervision of the Diagnostic Radiology/Breast Imaging Manager, Assistant Chief Technologist, and Mammography team, the Mammography Technologist Trainee performs a variety of technical and professional duties utilizing advanced breast imaging equipment to produce high-quality mammographic images for interpretation by radiologists.

All duties are performed in accordance with departmental and organizational policies, ACR and FDA/MQSA standards, and YNHHS service excellence expectations. To support operational needs, staff may be assigned to any YNHH Diagnostic Radiology location as necessary.


Responsibilities

Mammography Imaging & Technical Excellence

  • Perform high-quality and efficient mammographic examinations using age-specific imaging standards to support accurate radiologic interpretation.
  • Verify patient identity and examination orders prior to all procedures.
  • Operate mammography and computer equipment to ensure optimal image quality and technical accuracy.
  • Adhere to all ACR, FDA/MQSA, departmental, and organizational guidelines and standards.
  • Conduct daily inspections and quality checks of mammography equipment, ultrasound equipment (when applicable), and supporting information systems, including RIS, PACS, and reporting systems.
  • Report equipment malfunctions promptly and coordinate with service or IT support as needed.

  • Deliver compassionate, patient-centered care while ensuring patient safety, comfort, and satisfaction.
  • Clearly explain procedures and address patient questions or concerns before imaging begins.
  • Support a welcoming and professional environment that promotes positive patient experiences.
  • Help achieve departmental patient satisfaction goals through exceptional service and communication.

Teamwork & Collaboration

  • Demonstrate professionalism, courtesy, and teamwork in interactions with patients, physicians, coworkers, and leadership.
  • Collaborate effectively with clinical and support teams to facilitate efficient scheduling and completion of exams and procedures.

Compliance & Professional Development

  • Participate in ongoing education and training to maintain compliance with ACR, FDA/MQSA, State, and ARRT requirements.
  • Complete required continuing education credits and maintain documentation as needed for accreditation and regulatory compliance.
  • Participate in departmental quality, safety, and patient experience initiatives.

Environment & Safety

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe imaging environment.
  • Monitor and communicate supply needs to ensure uninterrupted patient care.

Qualifications

Education

  • Graduate of an AMA-approved Radiologic Technology program.
  • Associate degree preferred.

Experience

  • Demonstrated technical skills consistent with entry-level mammography standards.
  • Previous breast imaging exposure is a plus but not required.

Licensure & Certifications

  • ARRT Registered Technologist in Radiography [RT(R)] required.
  • Connecticut State License required.
  • Must successfully complete Mammography training and sit for Mammography boards within one year of training.
  • CPR certification preferred.
