About the Role

The primary purpose of the Chief Technologist position is to perform routine and specialized functions for the Division of Chemistry/Biochemistry under the direction of the Director and/or designee. Assists the Director in the operation of the Section through supervision and/or performance of proper laboratory tests, oversees budget expenses, general administrative supervision, maintaining proper regulatory protocols, and other assigned duties. 


What You’ll Do

  • Service provided is patient centered; actively contributes to creating a friendly, welcoming, and safe environment for UH customers; communicates clearly to ensure understanding; responds to complaints and concerns by resolving issues immediately whenever possible; organizes work process to accommodate customer needs, including internal customers and co-workers; meets or exceeds customer expectations for service; acts as a role model for Service Excellence; maintains professional composure in the workplace; works effectively with team to ensure customer service scores for work area meet/exceed targets; demonstrates respect for patient rights.

  • Supervises daily operations and specialized functions of the Laboratory and its component units with the Section Heads; prioritizes, schedules, assigns, and monitors duties of the staff to maintain optimum accuracy, efficiency, and compliance of operational performance of the section.

  • Introduces new procedures and policies; maintains, reviews and revises procedures in a timely manner to ensure all procedures are accurate and up to date; monitors compliance with CAP, CLIA 88 and other federal regulations; maintains policies on MCN; assists the Director in preparing response to regulatory citations, observations or deficiencies as assigned; maintains compliance with all necessary requirements for each regulatory standard to pass the unannounced CAP inspection.

  • Prepares, maintains, and reviews statistical reports, QC reports, document control systems, and maintains records as required by the department; prepares QA statistical reports monthly and presents them quarterly at committee meetings and maintains records.

  • Pulls and reviews data for Operating Salary and Non-Salary budgets from Controller’s Library Financial reports, explaining any variances monthly; participates in budget preparation and monitors budgetary expenditures; participates in the decisions regarding long-term and short-term planning for testing, instrument selection, and other related items for the section; recommends Capital equipment purchases for section.

  • Oversees inventory and ordering of supplies and equipment, utilizing the Marketplace software; checks general housekeeping and safety of Laboratory; turns in Environment of Care rounds as requested by regulatory standards and observations.

  • Participates in approved clinical research projects; performs special studies and does validations of new methods as required; maintains knowledge of trends and developments in the Biochemistry Laboratory on a continual basis and recommends changes to the department.

  • Responsible for hiring, training, recommending termination, and performance evaluations of Laboratory Staff in a timely manner in accordance with established policies; monitors attendance of staff employees using the Infor Workforce Management System; assists in Continuing Education of laboratory personnel and makes sure staff comply with the mandatory training assigned; provides service to and communicates with University Hospital staff, patients, and visitors in a professional, courteous, and sensitive manner; understands and adheres to University Hospital’s compliance standards as they appear in University Hospital's Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy; keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and University Hospital regulations, laws, and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified; ensures that the staff are trained and evaluated on their knowledge of and adherence to compliance policies and procedures specific to their jobs; performs other related duties as assigned.


What You’ll Bring

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree plus M.T. (ASCP) or equivalent and three (3) years of experience as a medical technologist, including one (1) year of supervisory experience required.
  • Candidates who do not have the ASCP certification will be considered but must attain certification within one (1) year of hire.

Compensation (NJ Job Transparency Law)

In compliance with New Jersey’s Pay Transparency Act, the hourly rate for this position is $53.00.
