Job description

Consult Responder

Under the general direction of the Organ Recovery Manager and Director Organ Recovery, and while following all Infinite Legacy procedures, policies and Standard Operating Procedures, the Consult Responder (CR) will utilize established parameters, healthcare knowledge and expertise to respond to referrals for potential organ donor candidates received from the hospitals served by the organization. The CR assesses, documents and evaluates potential organ donors while working collaboratively with various departments and team members of Infinite Legacy. The CR will establish collaborative plans with hospital staff to optimize the donation process in alignment with best practices.

The CR also provides on-site assistance to other IL staff as well as participates in hospital educational and outreach activities as needed. This position participates in the Organ Donation Services call schedule that provides service to donor hospitals 24 hours/day, 365 days per year.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor of Science degree preferred. EMT, paramedic certification, professional training in healthcare related field OR some college instruction in a healthcare related field preferred.

One year of healthcare experience in a clinical setting. Knowledge of basic medical terminology and human anatomy, as well as the ability to understand and interpret patient charts and laboratory reports.

Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Ability to function independently or collaboratively with key stakeholders during times of crisis or high stress with demonstrated problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal, organizational and time management skills. Ability to use a computer for data entry and retrieval of information.
  • Ability to function for extended hours occasionally beyond 12 hours and the ability to work and/or take calls seven days a week, 12 hours a day.
  • Valid driver's license, proof of insurance and be insurable under Infinite Legacy's master policy.
  • Ability to travel throughout Infinite Legacy's donor service area.
Duties/Responsibilities:
  1. Maintains a work schedule of a minimum of 15, 12-hour call days (or equivalent) per month in order to respond to organ referrals and documents required donor data in the organization's referral database. Additional shifts will be required if the department is short-staffed.
  2. Rounds on units with high referral activity outside of active referrals including off-shift rounds.
  3. Facilitates communication between IL team and hospital team to identify and protect donation potential.
  4. Provides formal and real-time hospital education as well as provides referral/case follow up to hospital staff.
  5. Identifies barriers to donation process and develops strategies to mitigate process breakdowns.
  6. Evaluates medical suitability of potential organ and/or tissue donors, utilizing information from medical records, history and physical examination and current health status and performs comprehensive donor physical assessments.
  7. Collaborates with the Administrator on Call or designee, requests and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests needed for evaluation of suitability and clinical management of potential organ and/or tissue donors. May be asked to bridge for case initiation or donor management when needed with assistance from an Organ Recovery Coordinator.
  8. Collaborates with Referral Triage Coordinator and Administrator on Call to determine a plan of action for following potential donor cases, deferral of non-eligible donor referrals or activation of the appropriate Infinite Legacy team members.
  9. May train new CR staff to perform all functions of the role. Meets all documentation requirements in the role of the preceptor in conjunction with the Education Department.
  10. Attends all scheduled organ recovery meeting days and mandatory training sessions.
  11. Completes office duties (i.e., data entry, file audits, equipment & supply preparation and/or transportation, etc.) required as referral activity permits.
  12. Participates in Hospital Development and Organ Recovery activities as needed, assigned by their Manager.
  13. Maintains compliance with documentation and the organization's Standard Operating Procedures.
  14. Other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions:

This position requires consistent availability, travel and certain physical, language and communication abilities, including:

  1. Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials and pharmacological agents, with little likelihood of harm if established health precautions are followed.
  2. Occasional need to transfer organs, blood specimens and/or tissue samples from one location to another.
  3. Travel requiring use of air transportation, emergency ground vehicles, ground limousine service and/or driving a personal or company vehicle for extended hours including nights, holidays and weekends.
  4. Extended hours and travel to evaluate and manage organ referrals.
  5. Valid driver's license and reliable, insured automobile for transportation.
  6. Ability to move or traverse within an office, hospital and outdoors.
  7. Manual dexterity sufficient to operate telephones and computers.
  8. Frequent and prolonged use of computer screen, which may produce visual fatigue.
  9. Ability to accurately communicate, converse and exchange information in English over the telephone and in person.
  10. Computer literacy in a Microsoft Windows environment and demonstrated competency in the use of Microsoft Office software programs.
  11. Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials, pharmacological agent, with likelihood of harm if established health precautions are not followed.
  12. Physically demanding lifting, pushing and pulling of supplies, equipment and carts with little likelihood for injury if proper body mechanics and procedures are followed.
  13. This position is a Level 1 โ€“ High Level Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens and TB. Employees are in a hospital setting and have direct contact with donors or donor organs and tissues through donor management, recovery and processing.
