How much do infantryman jobs pay per month?

As of May 31, 2026, the average monthly pay for infantryman in the United States is $1,697.08, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $1,666.67 and $1,708.33 per month, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Infantryman, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Infantryman, you need physical fitness, weapons proficiency, tactical knowledge, and a high school diploma or GED, often supplemented by completion of basic combat training. Familiarity with military equipment, communication devices, and navigation systems is crucial, along with potential certifications like Combat Lifesaver. Strong teamwork, mental resilience, and disciplined communication are standout soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are vital to ensure mission success, unit safety, and effective operations in demanding and high-pressure environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Infantrymen during their initial training and deployment?

Infantrymen often encounter both physical and mental challenges during initial training and deployment. The role requires adapting to rigorous physical demands, developing strong teamwork skills under stressful conditions, and quickly learning tactical procedures. Additionally, Infantrymen must be prepared for long periods away from home and rapidly changing environments, which can be both physically exhausting and mentally taxing. Support from fellow soldiers and access to military resources are crucial for overcoming these challenges.

What are Infantrymen?

Infantrymen are soldiers who serve as the main land combat force and backbone of the Army. They are trained to engage in ground combat, often operating on foot or with armored vehicles, and are responsible for capturing, holding, and defending terrain. Infantrymen perform a wide range of tasks, including patrolling, securing areas, and engaging enemy forces in direct combat. Their role is physically demanding and requires a high level of discipline, teamwork, and resilience. Training for infantrymen covers weapons handling, tactics, survival skills, and first aid.

Do infantry make good money?

Infantry soldiers typically receive a base salary that varies by rank and years of service, with additional pay for combat, hazardous duty, and special skills. While the salary provides a stable income, it is generally lower than many civilian jobs requiring similar skills, but benefits such as housing, healthcare, and retirement are included. Advancement and specialized training can increase earning potential over time.
