Indirect Procurement Intern information

What does an indirect procurement intern do?

An Indirect Procurement Intern supports the procurement team in sourcing and purchasing goods and services that are not directly used in a company's core product or service but are essential for business operations, such as office supplies, IT services, and marketing materials. Their responsibilities often include assisting with supplier selection, conducting market research, analyzing spend data, and helping with contract management. Through these tasks, interns gain experience in negotiation, supplier relationship management, and procurement processes, preparing them for careers in supply chain or procurement roles.

What types of projects and tasks can an indirect procurement intern expect to work on during their internship?

As an Indirect Procurement Intern, you can expect to support sourcing and supplier management activities for non-production goods and services, such as office supplies, IT equipment, or facilities management. Typical responsibilities include assisting with data analysis, preparing and issuing requests for quotations (RFQs), helping evaluate supplier proposals, and participating in cost-saving initiatives. Interns often collaborate closely with cross-functional teams like finance, legal, and operations to ensure alignment with company policies and objectives. This hands-on experience provides valuable insight into procurement processes and helps build foundational skills for a career in supply chain or procurement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an indirect procurement intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Indirect Procurement Intern, you need a basic understanding of procurement processes, strong analytical abilities, and enrollment in a business-related degree program. Familiarity with procurement software such as SAP Ariba or Coupa, as well as proficiency in Excel, is typically expected. Strong communication, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills help interns collaborate with stakeholders and manage multiple tasks effectively. These skills and tools ensure efficient support of procurement operations and contribute to cost-effective sourcing decisions.
