Job description

From keeping the amenities and grounds clean to assisting with event setups, our Custodians are always on the move ensuring the Indianapolis Zoo is sanitized and safe for our guests. The Indianapolis Zoo is on the hunt for a Full-Time Custodian to join our wild herd!

The ideal candidate is committed to advancing the Zoo's mission to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world. The successful candidate must display a cooperative and team-oriented personality and the ability to work independently with limited supervision. This is a full-time, 40 hours per week position that requires availability to work weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.

What You'll Do

  • Assist with non-catered event setups and seasonal event setups such as CATZ, Zoo Boo, and Zoobilation.
  • Assist with snow and trash removal throughout Zoo grounds.
  • Clean and vacuum event spaces to ensure cleanliness standards are maintained.
  • Have responsibility for daily stocking and cleanliness of restrooms, outdoor food service areas, general pathways, landscaping, benches, trashcans, and both carpeted and tiled areas.
  • Ensure all Zoo sanitation, chemical handling and safety standards are followed.
  • Keep all equipment in good working order.

What We're Looking For

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Background in janitorial/custodial/housekeeping is highly desired.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and have a driver's license and record insurable by Zoo insurance.
  • Ability to detect, assess, identify and observe surroundings to make sound judgments, along with the ability to communicate verbally, comprehend and decipher information accurately, using a two-way radio and telephone.
  • Ability to frequently move from area to area while transporting items (up to 10 pounds) across Zoo grounds for various needs and the ability to position items (up to 20 pounds) short distances.
