What is an independent sales agent?

Independent Sales Agents are self-employed professionals who sell products or services on behalf of companies, typically working on a commission basis. Unlike full-time employees, they operate independently and often represent multiple companies within a particular industry or market. Their main role is to generate new business, manage client relationships, and close sales deals. Independent Sales Agents enjoy flexible work arrangements but are responsible for their own expenses, taxes, and client management. This role is ideal for individuals who are entrepreneurial, self-motivated, and skilled in sales.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent sales agent, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Independent Sales Agent, you need strong sales acumen, negotiation skills, and a proven track record in business development, typically supported by a high school diploma or higher. Familiarity with CRM software, lead generation tools, and digital communication platforms is often crucial. Outstanding interpersonal skills, self-motivation, and resilience help you build client relationships and navigate setbacks. These abilities are vital for consistently meeting sales targets and growing a loyal customer base in a competitive, commission-driven environment.

What are some common challenges independent sales agents face, and how can they overcome them?

Independent Sales Agents often face challenges such as building a reliable client base, managing multiple product lines, and maintaining motivation without direct supervision. Success in this role requires proactive networking, excellent time management, and strong self-discipline. Leveraging CRM tools, setting clear goals, and staying up-to-date with industry trends can help agents overcome these obstacles and grow their sales pipeline.

Independent Sales Agent - Life Insurance

Smith Family Agency

Fishers, IN

$50K - $70K/yr

Full-time, Part-time

Re-posted 10 days ago

Key responsibilities

  • Prospect and communicate with potential clients to sell life insurance policies.

  • Build and manage a personal business by following the provided system and tracking activity.

  • Provide ongoing service and support to clients to protect families and ensure client satisfaction.

Job description

Independent Brokerage | 10+ Carrier Partners | 1099 / 100% Commission Opportunity

THIS ISN'T FOR EVERYONE. THAT'S INTENTIONAL.

The Smith Family Agency has been in the life insurance business since 2019. As an independent brokerage with access to 10+ carrier partners, we've grown year over year — closing out 2025 with nearly** $3 million in premium sales.** But the numbers we're proudest of aren't the sales. They're the families we've protected and the agents who've built real success here.

We're building something bigger, and we're looking for the right people to build it with us.

** The Opportunity**

This can become an extraordinary career. You can earn significant income, build freedom, protect families, build a business, and become a leader. But none of that happens automatically. You will have to work.

The Reality

We believe in being upfront about what this business takes.

You will:

  • Hear no — often.
  • Have uncomfortable conversations.
  • Prospect consistently.
  • Need to invest in yourself and your business.
  • Study and continue learning.
  • Be coached and held accountable.
  • Have your activity and business quality measured.

This is a 1099, 100% commission opportunity. There is no salary or hourly wage.

And getting your license is only the beginning. A license gives you permission to begin learning. It does not make you a professional. Your habits, discipline, skill, character, and consistency determine what happens next.

** Who We’re Looking For**

We're not trying to hire everyone.

We're looking for people who already know how to work, lead, serve, and show up when things get hard.

You should be:

  • Hardworking — you don't need someone standing over you to be productive.
  • Coachable — you're willing to learn and apply what you're taught.
  • Resilient — rejection and setbacks don't stop you.
  • Accountable — you take ownership of your results.
  • Disciplined — you understand that freedom requires responsibility.
  • Driven — you want to improve, compete, and build something.
  • **People-oriented **— you're comfortable communicating, listening, and building trust.
  • Entrepreneurial — you want to build a business, not simply clock into a job.

People who often thrive in this business come from backgrounds such as teaching, first response, military, sales, hospitality, small business ownership, and coaching. But you don't need one of those titles.

If you've led, served, sold, coached, built, competed, or learned how to keep showing up when things get hard — you may have what it takes to build something here.

** Job Details**
  • Job Type: Full-time or part-time
  • Compensation: 1099, commission-only position
  • Income Potential: $50,000-$150,000+ based on performance
  • Schedule: Flexible, set your own hours
  • Location: Nationwide
What We Provide

We provide the training, tools, coaching, systems, and support. You provide the effort and execution.

You'll have:

  • Access to 10+ carrier partners.
  • A proven system for building your business.
  • Ongoing coaching and mentorship.
  • Training and professional development.
  • The ability to work independently with a team behind you.
  • A path to build a business — and eventually lead one.
  • The opportunity to genuinely protect families for a living.

We expect you to show up, do the work, follow the system, stay coachable, track your activity, take ownership, and serve clients with integrity.

We're not looking for someone who wants to be handed a business. We're looking for someone who wants to build one.

** How To Apply**

If you're looking for a guaranteed paycheck, predictable days, or a position where someone tells you exactly what to do every hour — this probably isn't for you. If you're willing to learn, work, get uncomfortable, and take ownership of your results — this could become something much bigger than a job. IT COULD BECOME YOUR BUSINESS. If that sounds like the kind of challenge you're looking for, we want to hear from you. Come prepared to tell us why you're the kind of person who will succeed here.
