What is an independent nurse practitioner?

Independent Nurse Practitioners are advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) who are licensed to diagnose, treat, and manage patients’ health care independently, without direct supervision from a physician. They are able to assess patients, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe medications, and develop treatment plans. In some states, they have full practice authority, meaning they can operate their own clinics and provide comprehensive care. This role requires a high level of education and clinical training, usually a master's or doctoral degree in nursing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent nurse practitioner?

To thrive as an Independent Nurse Practitioner, you need advanced clinical skills, a Master's or Doctoral nursing degree, and valid nurse practitioner licensure, often with prescriptive authority. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, diagnostic tools, and telehealth platforms is also important. Strong decision-making, self-motivation, and excellent communication skills help you manage patients autonomously and coordinate care effectively. These skills and qualifications are essential for delivering high-quality, patient-centered care while operating independently in diverse healthcare settings.

What are some common challenges independent nurse practitioners face when managing their own practice?

Independent Nurse Practitioners often encounter challenges such as handling administrative duties, navigating state-specific regulations, and balancing patient care with business management. Without the support structure of a larger healthcare organization, they must manage billing, insurance claims, and compliance on their own. Additionally, building a patient base and establishing referral networks can require significant effort and strong community engagement skills. Despite these challenges, many find the autonomy and ability to directly impact patient care highly rewarding.

What is the difference between Independent Nurse Practitioner vs Physician Assistant?

Job description

ROLE OVERVIEW

We are recruiting Nurse Practitioners for a fully remote, full-time W-2 direct provider role with a value-based healthcare company launching its first clinical teams across multiple states. The Delaware market is one of our most urgent needs right now.

The mission of this organization is simple: turn the home into the engine of care. They serve medically complex Medicaid and Dual Eligible members, frail elderly individuals, and people with multiple chronic conditions who too often have no clinical pathway when early warning signs show up. They exist to be that proactive clinical bridge, catching changes early, intervening fast, and keeping patients safely at home.

LOOKS LIKEWHAT THE ROLE

Fully remote telehealth, Monday through Friday, eight to five. Providers conduct virtual patient assessments, medication management, care planning, and follow-up through video visits. They coordinate with PCPs, specialists, managed care organizations, and community partners. They lead advance care planning and goals-of-care conversations with patients and families. They support HCC coding, risk adjustment, and HEDIS and STAR quality gap closure through their documentation. There is also a shared rotating 24/7 after-hours triage component paid as an additional stipend on top of base salary.

REQUIREMENTS — PLEASE SCREEN CAREFULLY FOR ALL OF THESE
  • Active Delaware NP license — candidate must currently live in Delaware OR SURROUNDING STATES and licensed in DE.
  • FNP or AGNP board certification required. General NP only is not sufficient.
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years of independent NP practice.
  • True primary care or longitudinal chronic disease management experience. Urgent care only or episodic care backgrounds are not a fit.
  • Significant telehealth experience that is current and active, not just COVID era. They need to be comfortable making clinical decisions based solely on a video visit with no hands-on access, no vitals, and no remote monitoring equipment.
  • Value-based care experience or a demonstrated understanding of the philosophy. Fee-for-service mindset is a red flag.
  • Familiarity with HCC coding, HEDIS measures, and STAR ratings in day-to-day practice. Candidates who cannot give specific examples of how they have used these in practice will not advance.
  • Active DEA and full prescriptive authority.
  • Medicare and Medicaid provider number preferred.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset and comfort with a startup environment.
  • This must be their primary role. Candidates with multiple active employer commitments that would compete with a Monday through Friday eight to five schedule are not a fit.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Base salary $130,000 to $140,000 depending on experience, with flexibility up to $150,000 for candidates whose resume clearly warrants it. Additional stipend for on-call rotation. Full benefits including medical, dental, vision, 401k with match, CEU days and reimbursement, and multi-state licensure reimbursement.
