Independent contractor video editors are professionals who are hired on a freelance or contract basis to edit video content for clients. Unlike full-time employees, they typically work for multiple clients and handle their own business operations, such as invoicing and taxes. Their responsibilities often include assembling raw footage, adding effects, syncing audio, and producing polished final videos according to client specifications. Independent contractors have the flexibility to choose their projects and may work remotely or on-site. This role requires strong technical skills, creativity, and the ability to meet deadlines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent contractor video editor?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor Video Editor, you need expert proficiency in video editing, storytelling, and familiarity with industry-standard software like Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro, often supported by a portfolio of past work. Mastery of technical tools such as color grading software, motion graphics applications, and collaborative platforms like Frame.io is commonly expected. Strong communication, time management, and problem-solving skills help you collaborate with clients and deliver projects on deadline. These skills ensure you consistently produce high-quality content that meets client expectations and stands out in a competitive freelance market.

What are some common challenges faced by independent contractor video editors, and how can they be managed?

Independent contractor video editors often face challenges such as managing fluctuating workloads, meeting tight deadlines, and aligning with diverse client expectations. Successfully handling these challenges typically involves strong organizational skills, effective communication with clients, and the ability to quickly adapt to different project styles and requirements. Building a network of repeat clients and setting clear contracts can help provide stability, while staying up-to-date with the latest editing software ensures continued competitiveness in the field.

Key responsibilities

  • Edit video content across various formats, primarily 16:9 for OTT and broadcast, from inception through final delivery.

  • Design and produce motion graphics for broadcast, OTT, digital campaigns, and other channels, ensuring clear communication whether audio is on or off.

  • Collaborate with creative team members and present work-in-progress and final assets to internal teams and clients.

Job description

Collier.Simon is an independent, full-service creative agency in the Los Angeles/Hollywood area. We work with our client partners to develop creative solutions that truly move the needle. Clients range from Fortune 500-type household names to up-and-comers across a variety of industries and verticals. Weโ€™re in the midst of a tech-powered transformation โ€“ using AI to supercharge creativity, not replace it โ€“ and weโ€™re looking for people who are already exploring whatโ€™s possible.

Weโ€™re looking for a full-time Video Editor & Motion Designer with strong traditional craft who is actively experimenting with AI and emerging tools in their workflow. This is a handsโ€‘on creative role โ€“ youโ€™ll be editing and animating across a wide range of project types, with the majority of work being 16:9 for OTT and broadcast โ€“ and we want someone who is already thinking about how new tools and technology can make the work better and faster. Youโ€™ll be a core member of the creative team, partnering daily with our Creative Director, Head of Production, art directors, and copywriters.

You Might Be a Fit If Youโ€ฆ
  • Are equally comfortable editing long-form (:90) and short-form (:10) video and crafting polished motion graphics
  • Have a strong eye for design, typography, and layout โ€” not just cutting
  • Can develop videos that communicate clearly whether sound is on or off โ€” critical for OTT, PMAX, and other placements where audio may not play
  • Are already integrating AI tools into your video and motion workflow and can speak to whatโ€™s working
  • Thrive in a collaborative team environment and can also execute independently with minimal oversight
  • Stay current on trends in video, motion, and AI-powered creative tools โ€” and are actively testing new ones
  • Work well under pressure and know how to prioritize in a fastโ€‘paced, deadlineโ€‘driven environment
  • Are excited to grow with an agency and invest in longโ€‘term creative relationships with clients and teammates
What Youโ€™ll Do
  • Edit video content across formats โ€” with the majority of work being 16:9 for OTT and broadcast, plus sizzle reels, digital advertising assets, PMAX and other soundโ€‘on/soundโ€‘off placements, and occasional social and creatorโ€‘style edits โ€” from inception through final delivery
  • Design and produce motion graphics for broadcast, OTT, digital campaigns, and other channels, with an ability to craft work that communicates clearly whether audio is on or off
  • Ensure all deliverables are onโ€‘brand, strategically sound, and technically specโ€™d correctly
  • Collaborate closely with the Creative Director, Head of Production, art directors, and copywriters throughout the creative process
  • Present workโ€‘inโ€‘progress cuts and final assets to internal teams and clients as needed
  • Maintain organized project files and adhere to delivery standards
  • Bring AI tools and workflow thinking to the table โ€” sharing what youโ€™re experimenting with and helping identify opportunities to work smarter across video and motion production
  • Contribute to building out and evolving our internal video and motion practices as the team and toolset grow
  • This is a fully remote role that requires impeccable communication and the ability to thrive in collaboration
Requirements
  • 3+ years of video editing and motion design experience in an agency, studio, or similar creative environment
  • Expertise in Adobe Premiere and After Effects โ€” these are nonโ€‘negotiable
  • Experience collaborating in Figma
  • Solid design fundamentals: typography, layout, composition, and motion principles
  • Experience producing assets across a range of formats, including OTT/broadcast spots, digital advertising (including PMAX and other soundโ€‘off environments), longโ€‘form content, and social video
  • Demonstrated ability to craft video that reads clearly both soundโ€‘on and soundโ€‘off (captions, kinetic type, visual storytelling, etc.)
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining quality and meeting deadlines
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail throughout the production process
  • Actively experimenting with AIโ€‘powered tools for video and motion โ€” whether AIโ€‘assisted editing, generative visuals, automated workflows, or other emerging tools โ€” and able to speak to your experience with them
  • Available to work standard PST business hours
Benefits

Benefits including healthcare, 401K, vacation/PTO policy to be shared in greater detail during the interview process.

Collier.Simon provides equal employment opportunity to all individuals regardless of their race, color, creed, religion, gender, age, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by state, federal, or local law.
