Job description

ob Summary
The Millwright Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and coordinating millwright and mechanical maintenance activities in an industrial environment. This role supervises field personnel, contractors, and maintenance crews engaged in the installation, repair, alignment, troubleshooting, and maintenance of rotating and stationary equipment. The Millwright Supervisor ensures all work is executed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company standards, production requirements, and regulatory guidelines.
This position supports daily maintenance operations, outages, shutdowns, and reliability initiatives within facilities such as refineries, petrochemical plants, paper mills, power plants, and heavy manufacturing operations.
Key Responsibilities
Supervision & Leadership
  • Supervise and direct millwright crews, contractors, and mechanical maintenance personnel.
  • Assign daily work activities and ensure proper manpower utilization.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, mentoring, and technical guidance to maintenance teams.
  • Monitor workforce productivity, performance, and adherence to safety standards.
  • Conduct daily toolbox meetings and communicate work priorities.

Mechanical Maintenance Operations
  • Oversee maintenance, installation, troubleshooting, and repair of:
    • Pumps
    • Compressors
    • Motors
    • Gearboxes
    • Conveyors
    • Turbines
    • Fans and blowers
    • Rotating equipment
  • Ensure proper equipment alignment, balancing, and precision maintenance practices.
  • Coordinate preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities.
  • Support emergency repair and breakdown response efforts.

Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with:
    • OSHA regulations
    • Site safety requirements
    • Process Safety Management (PSM) standards
  • Enforce safe work practices including:
    • Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)
    • Confined space entry
    • Hot work permitting
    • Rigging and lifting procedures
  • Participate in safety audits, incident investigations, and corrective actions.
  • Promote a strong safety-first culture.

Planning & Scheduling
  • Coordinate with maintenance planners and operations personnel to prioritize and schedule maintenance work.
  • Support outage, turnaround, and shutdown planning activities.
  • Ensure required tools, materials, permits, and equipment are available prior to job execution.
  • Monitor work progress and adjust resources as needed to meet operational demands.

Quality Assurance
  • Ensure maintenance work is completed according to company standards, OEM specifications, and engineering requirements.
  • Verify proper installation and repair techniques are followed.
  • Minimize rework through effective supervision and quality control practices.

Reliability & Continuous Improvement
  • Assist with root cause analysis and equipment failure investigations.
  • Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability and maintenance efficiency.
  • Support continuous improvement and reliability-centered maintenance initiatives.

Administrative Responsibilities
  • Review and approve:
    • Daily reports
    • Timekeeping records
    • Work orders
    • Maintenance documentation
  • Utilize CMMS systems such as:
    • SAP
    • IBM Maximo
  • Track maintenance KPIs and crew performance metrics.

Qualifications
Education
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical training or millwright apprenticeship preferred.

Experience
  • 8-15+ years of industrial mechanical maintenance experience.
  • 3-5+ years of supervisory experience in industrial maintenance environments.
  • Experience in:
    • Refineries
    • Petrochemical plants
    • Paper mills
    • Power plants
    • Heavy manufacturing facilities preferred.

Skills & Knowledge
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Rotating equipment maintenance
    • Precision alignment
    • Rigging and lifting
    • Mechanical troubleshooting
  • Ability to read and interpret:
    • P&IDs
    • Mechanical drawings
    • Equipment schematics
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Experience with predictive maintenance technologies preferred.

Preferred Certifications
  • NCCER Millwright Certification
  • OSHA 30
  • NCCCO Rigging/Signal Person (preferred)
  • TWIC Card (for refinery/petrochemical access)

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work in industrial environments including:
    • Elevated areas
    • Confined spaces
    • Outdoor conditions
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.

Work Environment
  • Industrial facilities such as refineries, petrochemical plants, paper mills, and manufacturing sites.
