Job description

The purpose of Southwire's College Programs is to provide valuable experience to students pursuing a bachelor's degree or higher. Job Description

Part-time student opportunities allow undergraduate and graduate students to schedule their work around their classes.  These roles are available in both the office, customer service centers, and in the production environment.  This program will allow students to gain experience working in a business/manufacturing environment while maintaining their full time academic commitments.

This part time work can be done throughout the student's matriculation at college/university with the options for extended work hours during the summer months.  Student are eligible for part time opportunities after the completion of their freshman year and can work until graduation.  Students must be within a commutable distance of the Southwire location to participate in the Part Time Student Program.

Long Description

Position Summary

The Metallurgy Lab Intern will be responsible for conducting materials testing and sample preparation.  The project will be broad in nature and require considerable judgment, ingenuity, and originality. The ideal candidate is proactive, adaptable, and comfortable working independently as well as collaboratively. They should be eager to learn, demonstrate strong problem-solving abilities, and possess excellent communication and analytical skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Business support: conduct testing to industry standards as part of technical requests from external and internal customers 
  • Sample preparation (metallography) of metals and other materials including the use of power saws 
  • Operate research and analytical equipment in a laboratory environment 
  • Help maintain a safe and orderly workspace as part of the lab's 5S program 

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2.5 GPA.
  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college/university pursuing a degree in Materials Science, Engineering, Chemistry, Physics or equivalent. 
  • Hands on experience in a laboratory environment is a plus 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with differing priorities 
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organization, planning, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) or other relevant tools.
  • Reliable transportation to and from work.
