What is an independent contractor manufacturing?

An Independent Contractor Manufacturing job involves working on a contract basis to produce goods or components for a company without being a direct employee. Contractors typically operate their own business, supplying labor, materials, or finished products per agreed specifications. They are responsible for managing production, meeting quality standards, and handling taxes and expenses independently. This role offers flexibility but requires strong business management skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent contractor manufacturing?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor in Manufacturing, you need expertise in production processes, equipment operation, quality assurance, and a solid understanding of safety regulations, typically supported by vocational training or relevant industry experience. Familiarity with manufacturing management software, regulatory compliance standards, and tools such as CNC machines or assembly line equipment is often required. Strong organizational skills, self-motivation, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication with clients and teams are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure that you can efficiently manage multiple projects, deliver high-quality results, and maintain good client relationships in a flexible, often fast-paced environment.

What are the typical challenges faced by independent contractors in manufacturing roles?

Independent contractors in manufacturing commonly face challenges such as managing multiple client projects simultaneously, adapting to diverse production environments, and staying current with industry regulations and technologies. Because you may not always have the support structure of a traditional full-time team, self-management and the ability to quickly learn new systems or processes are essential. Additionally, sourcing your own contracts, networking with potential clients, and ensuring consistent income can require extra effort compared to salaried positions. However, many contractors enjoy the flexibility, variety, and control over their workload that this arrangement offers.

Overview:

Retail Merchandiser

SFS is growing, and we're looking for experienced Retail Merchandisers to join our nationwide network of independent contractors. This is an excellent opportunity for self-motivated professionals seeking flexible, supplemental income while servicing some of the nation's largest retailers and brands.

Our clients provide service windows rather than specific work schedules, allowing you a flexible schedule that works for you while meeting project requirements.

Assignments may include merchandising, product resets, cut-ins, inventory audits, display maintenance, POP installation, product stocking, and other retail support activities. Typical projects range from 12–20 hours per month, with some retailer locations requiring service during the first two weeks of each month.

If you enjoy working independently, staying active, and delivering high-quality retail execution, we'd love to connect with you.

Why Contract with SFS?

  • Set your own schedule
  • Choose the projects that fit your availability
  • Supplemental income opportunities
  • Competitive project-based pay
  • DailyPay available (enrollment required)
  • Ongoing merchandising, reset, and retail support projects
  • Opportunities to service multiple retailers and brands

What You'll Do

  • Review project instructions and client expectations before each assignment
  • Execute merchandising projects according to client requirements
  • Perform product resets, cut-ins, display maintenance, and promotional installations
  • Remove discontinued or outdated products and materials
  • Conduct inventory counts and product scanning activities
  • Stock and organize merchandise according to planograms and merchandising standards
  • Ensure displays are clean, organized, and accurately presented
  • Travel between retail locations as desired and accepted
  • Complete required reporting, including photos and project documentation, using a mobile device
  • Submit project completion reports on the same day services are performed

Skills & Qualifications

  • Previous merchandising, retail, reset, auditing, or customer service experience preferred
  • Ability to read and execute planograms and merchandising instructions
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple assignments
  • Effective communication and problem-solving skills
  • Comfortable using mobile technology for reporting and project documentation
  • Available to complete assignments during retailer service windows, primarily weekday daytime hours
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds repeatedly
  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach, kneel, and stand for extended periods
  • Reliable transportation for travel between assigned retail locations
  • Smartphone or tablet (Android or iOS) with internet access
  • Active email address for project communication and reporting
  • Ability to submit project completion reports and photos on the same day work is performed
