Job description

*This role would require attendance for all 21 Grand Forks Spitfires games from 6/9/26 - 8/8/26 (pending playoffs after 8/1/26 game.
Contract Summary
The Independent Contractor Athletic Trainer will serve as the primary sports medicine provider for designated athletic events. As an independent business entity, the contractor will maintain complete professional clinical autonomy over the prevention, assessment, immediate care, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The contractor is responsible for ensuring the health and safety of athletes during home games and managing on-field emergency response independently, without direct employer supervision of clinical methods.
Scope of Services and Deliverables
  • On-Field Medical Coverage: Serve as the primary medical responder for all designated home games, providing on-field acute care, emergency evaluation, and immediate triaging of athletic injuries.
  • Injury Prevention & Assessment: Perform pre-game evaluations, prophylactic taping, bracing, and preventative care routines to maximize athlete safety.
  • Rehabilitation & Conditioning: Independently design and guide evidence-based physical rehabilitation programs for injured athletes to ensure a safe, efficient return-to-play timeline.
  • Clinical Autonomy: Maintain independent judgment regarding final medical return-to-play clearances, putting athlete health and clinical standards above organizational pressure.
  • Medical Documentation: Maintain meticulous, confidential digital medical logs tracking evaluations, treatments, and physician referrals. Provide necessary high-level player availability statuses to team management.
  • Referral Coordination: Manage the referral process to local physicians, physical therapists, and emergency medical services when specialized or higher-level clinical care is required.

Knowledge, Skills & Professional Requirements
  • Professional Credentials: Must possess and maintain a valid Board of Certification (BOC) for the Athletic Trainer credential.
  • State Licensure: Must possess an active, unrestricted license to practice athletic training in the operating state.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer or BLS certification is strictly required.
  • Business Independence: Must provide proof of professional liability insurance coverage (minimum $1,000,000/$3,000,000 limits) and operate as an independent business entity (sole proprietorship, LLC, etc.).
  • Adaptability & Communication: Strong communication and public relations skills to effectively collaborate with coaches, athletes, and visiting medical teams in a fast-paced sports environment.
  • Availability: Must have flexible availability to align business services with the home game schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holiday events during the competitive season.

Engagement Structure
This position is strictly structured as an Independent Contractor (1099) agreement. The contractor will be compensated via a predetermined contract flat fee or hourly service rate as outlined in the finalized vendor agreement. The contractor maintains control over their scheduling fulfillment options, utilizes their own specialized medical tools where appropriate, and is responsible for all associated self-employment tax obligations, professional insurance premiums, and continuing education requirements.
