What is an Independent Contractor Cortex RN?

An Independent Contractor Cortex RN is a registered nurse who works on a contract basis, typically through the Cortex platform, providing nursing services to healthcare facilities or patients. Unlike staff nurses, independent contractors are not employees; they manage their own schedules, handle their own taxes, and often work for multiple clients. This role offers flexibility and autonomy but requires self-management and business skills in addition to nursing expertise. Independent Contractor Cortex RNs may perform tasks such as patient assessments, care coordination, and health education, depending on their contract assignments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Independent Contractor Cortex RN, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor Cortex RN, you need a valid RN license, clinical nursing experience, and a solid understanding of remote patient monitoring protocols. Familiarity with telehealth platforms, electronic health records (EHRs), and secure communication systems is typically required. Strong organizational skills, self-motivation, and effective communication are crucial for managing caseloads and collaborating remotely. These skills ensure high-quality patient care, compliance, and efficiency in a flexible, independent work environment.

What are some common challenges Independent Contractor Cortex RNs face when integrating with hospital teams?

Independent Contractor Cortex RNs often face the challenge of quickly adapting to new hospital environments and team dynamics. Because they are contracted for specific assignments, they must rapidly learn facility protocols, electronic health records systems, and workflow expectations. Building rapport with permanent staff and ensuring seamless patient care transitions can also be demanding. However, strong communication skills and adaptability help overcome these hurdles, allowing contractors to deliver high-quality care while maintaining professional flexibility.

Job description

Vellum Health is redefining mobile healthcare through a team of independent Infusion RNs delivering therapy across facilities in East-Central Texas. Our nurses operate autonomously in the field, supported by a seasoned clinical and operational team.

If you're ready to step away from 12-hour hospital shifts and high-volume units, and instead want flexibility, autonomy, and a focus on patient-centered care, this is your next chapter.

About the Role

As an Independent Infusion RN, you’ll provide skilled IV therapy and related infusion services across the Palestine–Corsicana–Athens–Mexia corridor. This is a mobile field role with visits dispatched based on facility schedules and patient need. Nurses function independently, with mileage reimbursement and full clinical escalation support provided.

Key Responsibilities

Administer IV medications and specialty infusions in skilled nursing and rehab facility settings

Monitor patient responses and manage infusion-related reactions per protocol

Maintain and access existing vascular devices (peripheral IVs, ports, PICCs — no line placement required)

Perform therapeutic injections (IM/SQ) as ordered

Provide patient education on therapy plans and care expectations

Document treatments electronically and communicate updates to providers

Ideal Candidate Profile

Active RN license in Texas

Minimum 1 year of IV infusion or specialty infusion experience

Confident working independently in the field

Current BLS certification

Valid driver’s license + reliable personal vehicle

Comfortable using mobile devices for charting and navigation

Schedule & Flexibility

We offer PRN and part-time opportunities in this region:

Part-time: 2+ shifts/week

PRN: Flexible/as needed

Immediate needs on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays based on facility coverage

What We Provide

Mileage reimbursement

24/7 clinical escalation support

Flexible scheduling

Ongoing training and credentialing support

A team culture focused on autonomy and support
