Independent Contractor Automation Engineer Contract information

How does working as an independent contractor automation engineer differ from being a full-time employee?

As an Independent Contractor Automation Engineer, you’ll typically handle project-based assignments with specific deliverables and deadlines, rather than ongoing tasks. Your daily responsibilities often involve collaborating remotely with client teams, attending virtual meetings, and providing progress updates. While you may have less direct supervision, you’ll need strong self-management skills and the ability to integrate quickly with different teams and workflows. This role offers flexibility, but also requires proactive communication to ensure alignment with client expectations and project goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent contractor automation engineer?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor Automation Engineer, you need expertise in automation frameworks, scripting languages (such as Python or Java), and a strong engineering or computer science background. Familiarity with tools like Selenium, Jenkins, Docker, and relevant certifications (e.g., ISTQB, AWS Certified DevOps Engineer) is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and effective communication are essential soft skills, especially when collaborating remotely or with diverse clients. These skills and qualities are crucial to deliver reliable automation solutions, meet project deadlines, and maintain high client satisfaction in a contract-based role.

What is an independent contractor automation engineer contract?

Independent Contractor Automation Engineer Contracts refer to agreements where an automation engineer is hired as an independent contractor, rather than a full-time employee, to design, implement, and maintain automation systems for a client or company. These contracts outline the scope of work, payment terms, project timelines, and deliverables. Independent contractors typically have more flexibility in how and when they work, but are responsible for their own taxes, benefits, and business expenses. This arrangement is common for specialized automation projects or when companies need temporary expertise.

We are seeking a Salesforce QA Automation Engineer to support IT modernization projects. In this role, you will lead quality assurance and test automation efforts to modernize legacy state infrastructure into scalable, cloud-based Salesforce solutions (Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, Experience Cloud, and custom Public Sector Solutions). You will build scalable test automation frameworks, validate complex integrations across legacy state systems, and ensure high reliability, security, and compliance with state and federal standards.

1. Automation Framework & Test Execution

  • Design & Maintain Automation Frameworks: Build, scale, and maintain robust, reusable test automation frameworks tailored for Salesforce (e.g., using Selenium, Provar, Playwright, Cypress, or Salesforce Test Automation Tools like UTAM).
  • Automate End-to-End Workflows: Create automated test scripts covering complex business processes, custom Apex logic, Lightning Web Components (LWC), Visualforce, and screen flows.
  • API & Integration Testing: Develop automated tests for REST/SOAP APIs to validate integrations between Salesforce and external systems (ERP, Marketing Automation, Payment Gateways, etc.).
  • CI/CD Pipeline Integration: Integrate automated test suites into DevOps and CI/CD pipelines (Copado, AutoRABIT, Salesforce DevOps Center, GitHub Actions, Jenkins) for regression and continuous testing.

2. Quality Assurance & Strategy

  • Test Planning & Strategy: Collaborate with Product Owners, Salesforce Architects, and Business Analysts to define test strategies, test plans, and acceptance criteria.
  • Regression & Release Testing: Own the automated regression testing suite and execute sanity/smoke tests before and after major Salesforce releases or deployment sprints.
  • Defect Management: Identify, log, track, and retest bugs using tools like Jira or Azure DevOps. Work closely with developers to isolate issues and accelerate root-cause analysis.
  • Data Management for Testing: Manage test environments (sandboxes), create test data generation strategies, and ensure proper sandbox masking and data refreshes.

3. Salesforce-Specific Quality Control

  • Security & Permissions Testing: Validate Salesforce Security Models (Profiles, Roles, Permission Sets, Field-Level Security, and Sharing Rules) through automated or manual verification.
  • Salesforce Release Upgrades: Assess, test, and prepare automated test suites for seasonal Salesforce releases (Winter, Spring, Summer) to detect breaking changes early.
  • Experience: 3–5+ years in QA Automation, with at least 2–3 years focused specifically on the Salesforce platform.

Required Skills:

  • 3+ years of experience as a QA Automation Engineer
  • Strong understanding of Salesforce architecture, data structures, Apex basics, LWC, and administrative capabilities.
  • Strong experience with Java, JavaScript, Python, or C#

Technical Stack:

  • Languages: Java, JavaScript, Python, or C#.
  • Automation Tools: Provar, Selenium WebDriver, Playwright, UTAM (User Interface Test Automation Model), or Cucumber/BDD frameworks.
  • API Tools: Postman, RestAssured, or SoapUI.
  • DevOps/Tools: Jira, GitHub/GitLab, Jenkins, Copado, or AutoRABIT.
  • Salesforce Knowledge: Strong understanding of Salesforce architecture, data structures, Apex basics, LWC, and administrative capabilities.

Certifications (Nice to Have):

  • Salesforce Certified Administrator
  • Salesforce Certified Development Lifecycle and Deployment Architect (or similar developer/platform certs)
