What is an independent contractor acupuncturist?

An Independent Contractor Acupuncturist is a licensed acupuncture professional who provides acupuncture services on a contract basis rather than as an employee of a clinic or healthcare facility. They often rent space in a wellness center or operate their own practice, handling their own scheduling, billing, and taxes. Independent contractor acupuncturists typically have more flexibility in their work hours and client base but are responsible for their own business expenses and regulatory compliance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent contractor acupuncturist?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor Acupuncturist, you need a comprehensive understanding of acupuncture techniques, knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine, and a valid state acupuncture license. Familiarity with practice management software, electronic health records, and relevant certifications such as NCCAOM are typically required. Outstanding interpersonal skills, self-motivation, and the ability to build rapport with clients are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure effective patient care, legal compliance, and business success in a competitive wellness industry.

What are some common challenges independent contractor acupuncturists face when building their own client base?

As an Independent Contractor Acupuncturist, one of the main challenges is developing a steady stream of clients without the built-in patient base of a larger clinic. Effective networking, local marketing, and building strong referral relationships with other healthcare professionals are essential to growing your practice. Additionally, managing administrative tasks such as scheduling, billing, and compliance with state regulations can require a significant time investment. However, overcoming these challenges often leads to greater professional autonomy and the opportunity to shape your practice according to your values.

Job description

Licensed Massage Therapist (Independent Contractor)

Rooted Method

Virginia Beach, VA

Massage therapy here is more than a service. It is an experience, a relationship, and an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in how someone feels.

Rooted Method is an elevated holistic wellness spa in Virginia Beach created for people who believe that feeling well is the foundation of living well.

We bring together therapeutic massage and bodywork, acupuncture, lymphatic drainage, infrared sauna, red light therapy, cold therapy, advanced skincare, facials, energy work, and other intentional wellness experiences in a beautifully designed environment.

Our approach is thoughtful and personal. We believe wellness isn't about quick fixes or one-size-fits-all treatments. It's about consistent care, skilled practitioners, meaningful rituals, and creating experiences that help people feel stronger, calmer, more balanced, and more connected to themselves.

We're looking for an experienced Licensed Massage Therapist who feels the same way about their craft.

The Opportunity:

This is an opportunity to practice massage in an environment where your skill, professionalism, and ability to connect with clients truly matter.

You'll have the opportunity to work with clients seeking everything from stress relief and relaxation to therapeutic bodywork, pain management, mobility support, recovery, and ongoing wellness.

We are looking for someone who takes pride in their work and wants to be known for the quality of care they provide.

What You'll Do

  • Provide exceptional, customized massage and bodywork based on each client's individual needs, goals, and preferences.
  • Combine strong technical skills with an intuitive, compassionate approach to create truly personalized treatments.
  • Perform therapeutic massage, including deep tissue work, with confidence and proficiency.
  • Help clients address tension, stress, discomfort, mobility limitations, recovery needs, and overall wellness goals.
  • Develop genuine relationships with clients and provide thoughtful recommendations for continued care when appropriate.
  • Educate clients on simple self-care practices and treatment recommendations that can support their goals between visits.
  • Maintain accurate and timely treatment documentation and uphold client confidentiality.
  • Maintain a beautiful, clean, organized, and peaceful treatment environment.
  • Communicate professionally with our Wellness Coordinators and fellow practitioners.
  • Contribute to a team culture centered around professionalism, kindness, accountability, and continued growth.

The Therapist We're Looking For

We're looking for an experienced and skilled practitioner who cares deeply about the experience they create.

You may be a great fit for Rooted Method if you:

  • Take genuine pride in your craft.
  • Have a warm, grounded, and welcoming presence.
  • Can make clients feel comfortable, heard, and cared for.
  • Are confident working independently while being a collaborative team member.
  • Understand that the small details matter—from the treatment itself to the environment you create around it.
  • Are dependable, punctual, and professional.
  • Are passionate about continued education and expanding your knowledge.
  • Enjoy working with clients who value therapeutic wellness and ongoing self-care.
  • Have strong hands-on experience and aren't afraid to use your skills.
  • Believe massage can be both deeply therapeutic and deeply restorative.

Experience with the following is a plus:

  • Deep tissue
  • Therapeutic massage
  • Sports/recovery massage
  • Prenatal
  • Myofascial techniques
  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage
  • Other advanced bodywork modalities

Schedule

We are looking for therapists who can provide weekday and weekend availability, with the ability to accommodate a consistent schedule.

Weekend availability is required.

Compensation & Perks

  • Independent Contractor position
  • Commission-based compensation per completed session
  • Expected earnings: $50–$165+ per hour
  • Opportunity to build a consistent clientele within an established wellness business
  • Wellness benefits including complimentary sauna, facial, and massage services
  • Discounts on Rooted Method apothecary products
  • Performance and incentive opportunities
  • Ongoing opportunities for education, growth, and collaboration
  • Beautiful, elevated treatment environment
  • Experienced front-of-house team handling scheduling, payments, and the client experience
  • Opportunity to work alongside a multidisciplinary wellness team

Benefits:

  • Continuing education credits
  • Employee discount
  • Flexible schedule
  • Free massages
  • Opportunities for advancement
