What is an independent contractor accountant?

An independent contractor accountant is a professional who provides accounting services to clients on a contract or freelance basis, rather than as a full-time employee. They may handle tasks such as bookkeeping, tax preparation, financial analysis, and consulting for businesses or individuals. Independent contractor accountants often work with multiple clients, set their own schedules, and manage their own business operations. This role allows for greater flexibility but also requires self-motivation and strong organizational skills.

What does an independent contractor accountant do?

An accounting independent contractor provides accounting services on a temporary, freelance basis. Your responsibilities as a contract accountant depend on the needs of each client with whom you work. In this position, you can specialize in a specific area, such as tax preparation, bookkeeping, or working to prepare financial documents for businesses. If you specialize in tax preparation, your work may be seasonal. An accountant can also help a business or individual audit their finances, organize their financial records, and handle payroll, accounts receivable, and accounts payable bookkeeping duties. You can work for more than one client at a time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent contractor accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor Accountant, you need strong expertise in accounting principles, tax regulations, and financial reporting, typically supported by a relevant degree and, often, a CPA certification. Proficiency in accounting software like QuickBooks, Xero, and familiarity with tax filing platforms is essential. Excellent time management, client communication, and problem-solving skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure accurate, compliant financial services and build client trust, which is crucial for maintaining and growing an independent practice.

How does collaboration typically work for independent contractor accountants who often work remotely or with multiple clients?

Independent contractor accountants frequently collaborate with clients and, in some cases, external teams such as tax advisors or auditors. Communication is usually managed through email, video calls, and specialized accounting software, allowing for document sharing and real-time updates. Effective collaboration requires setting clear expectations, regular check-ins, and maintaining organized records. Since you may be juggling several clients, strong time management and proactive communication skills are essential to ensure smooth workflows and client satisfaction.

Job description

Rush Street Interactive (NYSE: RSI) is a market leader in online casino and sports betting, currently operating real-money gaming with our brands: BetRivers.com, PlaySugarHouse.com, and RushBet.co. We're building bridges between online, social and land-based gaming businesses to create amazing, integrated experiences that keep players in the game.
We are seeking a Senior Manager, Corporate Accounting to lead the day-to-day operations of our corporate accounting function. Reporting to the Senior Director, Corporate Accounting & Reporting, this role owns the monthly close process across all corporate sub-teams (e.g., GL, Accounts Payable, Treasury), partners closely with other Finance and Accounting functions (e.g., SEC Reporting, FP&A, Accounting Operations, International Finance), and supports special projects as needed. As RSI scales, this role strengthens the accounting function and builds the operational rigor that the next stage of the company requires.
We're looking for a leader with presence and credibility, someone who can walk into any room, across any reporting line, and move people toward a common goal. The ideal candidate combines a strong command of US GAAP with a proven track record of leading teams, staying hands-on, driving accountability, and building cross-functional momentum in environments where influence matters as much as positional authority.
We are seeking candidates based in the Chicagoland area, as this role requires occasional in-person collaboration at our Chicago office.
What You'll Do:
  • Own the monthly close - drive timelines and deliver consolidated results across the Accounting and Finance function
  • Coach and develop - lead through real-time coaching, mentoring, and feedback, building leaders and driving accountability, not just completing tasks.
  • Anchor technical accounting decisions - serve as the first line of authority on US GAAP questions across the corporate accounting function.
  • Assess risk and strengthen controls - apply ongoing risk assessment to the Corporate Accounting function, strengthening the control environment as the business scales.
  • Drive cross-functional alignment - anticipate dependencies across teams and resolve issues before they become blockers, picking up special projects as needed.
  • Team Leadership and Development - Manage other Corporate Accounting leaders, who oversee day to day General Ledger, Accounts Payable, and Treasury accounting. As a manager of managers, set clear expectations, build leadership capability within the team, and foster a culture of ownership, urgency, and accountability.
  • General Ledger Ownership - Own GL accounting across cash, prepaid and other assets, long-lived assets, investments, accounts payable, and accrued and long-term liabilities, including review of journal entries and reconciliations.
  • Accounts Payable Oversight - Oversee the end-to-end procure-to-pay process, ensuring strong controls and accountability across vendor master maintenance, invoice approvals, payment execution, and GL recognition; partner cross-functionally on vendor sourcing, selection, and contracting.
  • Treasury Support - Support cash management and oversight of manual cash payments, contribute to banking relationships, and lead short-term liquidity forecasting and working capital planning.
  • Global Consolidation and Reporting - Partner with SEC Reporting to ensure the global consolidation is accurate, complete, and delivered ahead of each reporting deadline - including coordinating intercompany and multi-currency considerations and ensuring alignment between operating results and consolidated financial statements. (NetSuite familiarity a plus.)
  • Process Improvement and Automation - Identify and lead opportunities to automate and improve processes across the Corporate Accounting function, including the use of AI tools.
  • Cross-Functional Partnership - Partner with Latin America Finance to ensure global alignment of accounting processes and policies, and collaborate with leaders across accounting, finance, and the broader organization.

What You'll Bring:
  • BA/BS/MS degree in Accounting or CPA required.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, the kind that moves people and drives accountability. Experience leading in structured, high-stakes environments is a meaningful differentiator.
  • Proficiency in US GAAP with the ability to independently evaluate and guide accounting conclusions across a broad range of corporate accounting areas.
  • Comfort leveraging AI and automation tools to improve close accuracy, reduce manual work, and scale team output.
  • Familiarity with multi-currency accounting and intercompany transactions across global entities.
  • Proven track record of managing and developing a team in an accounting or finance function.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to track multiple moving parts across teams and keep close processes on schedule.
  • Ability to exercise influence without direct authority - credible and effective across teams regardless of reporting lines.
  • Clear, direct communicator with the ability to set expectations, deliver feedback, and escalate appropriately.
  • Experience with ERP systems; NetSuite experience a plus.
  • Public company experience preferred.
  • Able to travel occasionally both domestically and internationally #LI-REMOTE
