What is an inbound sales associate?

Inbound Sales Associates are professionals who handle incoming customer inquiries, typically via phone, email, or online chat, with the goal of converting these leads into sales. They provide information about products or services, answer customer questions, and guide potential buyers through the purchasing process. Unlike outbound sales roles, inbound sales associates focus on customers who have already shown interest, making their approach more consultative and service-oriented. Their responsibilities also include maintaining customer records and meeting sales targets set by their organization.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an inbound sales associate?

To excel as an Inbound Sales Associate, you need strong communication skills, product knowledge, and basic sales techniques, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software, telephony systems, and sales tracking tools is typically required. Active listening, problem-solving, and a customer-focused attitude are standout soft skills in this role. These abilities are crucial for converting leads, building rapport, and achieving sales targets in a competitive environment.

What are common challenges faced by inbound sales associates, and how can they be overcome?

Inbound Sales Associates often encounter challenges such as handling high call volumes, addressing diverse customer needs, and meeting sales targets under tight deadlines. To overcome these, it’s important to develop strong product knowledge, active listening skills, and efficient time management. Regular training sessions, supportive team environments, and leveraging CRM tools can also help associates stay organized and improve conversion rates. Collaborating closely with marketing and customer service teams further enhances the ability to provide personalized solutions and exceed customer expectations.

Job description

About the Role

This is a ground-floor opportunity to own top-of-funnel growth at a YC-backed healthtech startup that has doubled ARR in the last six months. Sitting at the intersection of sales, marketing, and operations, you'll work directly with the founding team to scale the company into new verticals — taking meaningful ownership from day one.

What You'll Do
  • Take inbound sales calls with prospective university partners and own deals through to close, freeing up founder bandwidth.

  • Plan and represent the company at nationwide conferences — handling logistics, booth setup, and pipeline conversations on the floor.

  • Coordinate marketing efforts including SEO contractors, promotional content, and video creation.

  • Build and run outbound campaigns via email and LinkedIn as inbound capacity stabilizes.

  • Pitch in on ad hoc growth and ops projects — no task is too small at this stage.

What We're Looking For
  • Up to 2 years of experience in sales or marketing roles, ideally at an early-stage startup (under 50 people).

  • Bachelor's degree from a competitive four-year university.

  • Hands-on experience with conference, event, or field marketing execution.

  • Strong ability to build and maintain professional relationships with external stakeholders.

  • Comfortable writing and delivering clear marketing or sales messaging to varied audiences.

  • Willing and able to travel to events nationwide.

  • Familiarity with CRM platforms, LinkedIn outreach, email outbound tools, and/or sales copilot software is a plus.

  • Background in humanities, communications, policy, or a related field is a plus.

  • Experience in high-accountability environments — competitive athletics, service industry, or similar — is a plus.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary range: $80,000–$100,000 USD annually. Visa sponsorship is not available for this role.

Location

On-site, 5 days per week in New York, NY.
