What is a trucking job?

Trucking jobs involve transporting goods and materials over land using large vehicles such as semi-trucks, tractor-trailers, or delivery trucks. Truck drivers are responsible for safely operating vehicles, following delivery schedules, and complying with transportation regulations. These jobs can include long-haul routes across states or local deliveries within cities. Trucking plays a crucial role in the supply chain by ensuring that products reach warehouses, retailers, and consumers on time.

What are some common challenges truck drivers face on the road and how can they be managed?

Truck drivers often encounter challenges such as long hours, unpredictable weather conditions, and strict delivery schedules. Managing fatigue by adhering to regulated driving hours, planning routes ahead of time to avoid traffic or hazardous conditions, and maintaining open communication with dispatchers can help mitigate these difficulties. Additionally, building a strong network with other drivers and staying updated on industry best practices can make the job more manageable and rewarding.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the trucking industry, and why are they important?

To thrive in trucking, you need a valid commercial driver's license (CDL), a clean driving record, and strong knowledge of road safety regulations. Familiarity with GPS navigation systems, electronic logging devices (ELDs), and basic vehicle maintenance tools is typically required. Excellent time management, communication, and problem-solving skills help drivers navigate routes efficiently and handle unexpected situations. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring safety, timely deliveries, and compliance with industry standards.

Job description

It's more than a job

As a member of the Freight Forwarding team Kuehne+Nagel, you will play a key role in transporting goods, optimising processes, and fulfilling our customers' promises. And by transporting medicines, toys and important machine parts, you are not only delivering goods, you are making small and big moments possible for people all around the world. At Kuehne+Nagel, our contribution counts in more ways than we imagine.

At Kuehne+Nagel, we are expanding our Air Logistics Trucking Operations network and are seeking experienced transportation professionals who understand how freight moves efficiently from origin to destination.

If you have experience in trucking operations, dispatch, load planning, pickup and delivery coordination, regional transportation, or final-mile execution, this is an opportunity to join a growing team responsible for optimizing the movement of airfreight across key U.S. markets.

How you create impact

As an Air Logistics Trucking Specialist, you will play a critical role in ensuring domestic transportation activities are executed accurately, efficiently, and on time.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate trucking activities supporting import and export airfreight shipments to ensure on-time execution and customer satisfaction.
  • Manage local Pickup & Delivery (P&D) operations and ensure timely movement of freight between customers, terminals, warehouses, and airport gateways.
  • Execute regional dispatch activities, including route planning, carrier assignments, and capacity management.
  • Build and optimize truck loads through consolidation opportunities to maximize efficiency and reduce transportation costs.
  • Coordinate Full Truckload (FTL), Less-than-Truckload (LTL), and final-mile transportation activities.
  • Monitor shipments throughout the transportation lifecycle and proactively resolve service disruptions, delays, and exceptions.
  • Communicate with carriers, drivers, warehouses, gateways, and internal stakeholders to ensure seamless freight movement.
  • Review transportation requirements, transit times, routing instructions, and customer-specific service commitments.
  • Negotiate rates, source capacity, and maintain strong relationships with approved transportation providers.
  • Ensure compliance with transportation regulations, operational procedures, and company standards.
  • Prepare, validate, and maintain transportation documentation and shipment records.
  • Accurately enter and maintain shipment, carrier, cost, and operational data within transportation management systems.
  • Analyze carrier performance and escalate service failures, capacity concerns, or operational risks when necessary.
  • Partner with Customer Care, Operations, Sales, and Warehouse teams to support customer requirements and account implementation activities.
  • Support load planning, network optimization, and transportation cost-saving initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and contribute to operational efficiency projects.
  • Maintain a high level of service, responsiveness, and problem resolution in a fast-paced transportation environment.
  • Assist in developing scalable trucking operations as Kuehne+Nagel expands its integrated Air Logistics Trucking network across key U.S. markets.
What we would like you to bring
  • 3-5 years of experience in trucking, transportation, dispatching, logistics, or freight operations.
  • Experience within the Semiconductor industry or SecureChain environment is preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with Truckload (FTL), Less-than-Truckload (LTL), Pickup & Delivery (P&D), regional dispatch, or final-mile operations.
  • Background working for a trucking company, carrier, transportation provider, or fleet operation preferred.
  • Ability to coordinate shipments, manage carrier relationships, and resolve operational issues in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with load planning, routing, consolidation, and capacity management.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and customer service skills.
  • High attention to detail with excellent time management and problem-solving abilities.
  • Familiarity with Transportation Management Systems (TMS) is a plus, but not required.
  • Freight forwarding experience is beneficial when combined with trucking or dispatch operations experience.
  • A proactive, "can-do" mindset with the ability to thrive in a dynamic logistics environment.
