Job Summary
The technician ensures that sterilization equipment operates efficiently, safely, and in compliance with healthcare facility standards. Assists in diagnosing problems or malfunctions in equipment, and fixes or communicates issues to upper management as needed. Works to test equipment to reach applicable standards, and keeps proper documentation for sterilization processes in equipment.
Essential Functions
- Repair or diagnose equipment malfunctions.
- Perform preventative maintenance on machinery to keep it in working order and prevent malfunctions in the future.
- Verifies that sterilization cycles meets regulatory requirements on sterilization devices such as autoclaves, washer-disinfectors, and other medical systems to meet ST108.
- Maintain water flow diagrams and conduct legionella risk assessments to meet PE.04.01.05 regulatory requirements.
- Performs environmental maintenance duties and assists in maintaining inventory.
- Document and maintain accurate sterilization records as needed.
- Inspect, assemble and test general and specialty instrumentation for proper functioning.
- Perform simple maintenance on equipment (i.e.: clean filters and drains).
- Verifies that equipment functions properly, requisitions for equipment maintenance, repair or replacement, and removes defective equipment.
- Maintains a clean work area
- Assists with maintaining established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality improvement, safety, and environmental and infection control standards.
- Communicates appropriately using good interpersonal skills
- Displays proper etiquette and mannerisms that reflect the Shine Behavior Standards.
- Promotes the Patient Safety Standards as a core value of the organization.
Other Duties
- Participates in departmental and association wide informational meetings and inservices, including staff meetings, association wide forums, and seminars.
- Reviews department and association wide policies and procedures annually. Develops and maintains new policies and procedures as needed.

Abilities
- Must be able to read, write, understand, and speak English.
- Ability to oversee the water management program by testing for bacteria, hardness, alkalinity, disinfectant and endotoxin levels.
- This position requires knowledge of reusable surgical instrumentation, micro surgical instrumentation, and power equipment.
- Knowledge and operation of sterile processing equipment (washers, steam, gas, ultrasonic and chemical sterilizers).
- Knowledge of cleaning of patient care equipment including but not limited to IV pumps, PCAs, - CPM machines, Pneumatic pumps, hypo/hyperthermia units.
- Knowledge of different types of sterilization materials and equipment to choose the appropriate method of sterilization for particular equipment or supplies.

Exerts up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. The worker is exposed to contact with chemicals and infectious fluids, heavy lifting, constant standing, extensive close work, and extensive computer work.
Required Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent
Preferred Education and Experience
- 2-3 years experience with sterile processing or similar function
