What is in place machining?

In place machining, also known as on-site or field machining, refers to performing precision machining operations directly at the equipment’s location rather than moving it to a machine shop. This service is commonly used for large, heavy, or immovable equipment found in industries like power generation, marine, and manufacturing. It helps minimize downtime, reduces transportation costs, and ensures that repairs or modifications are completed efficiently and accurately without dismantling entire assemblies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an in place machining technician?

To thrive as an In Place Machining Technician, you need strong mechanical aptitude, precision measurement skills, and experience with industrial machining processes, often supported by a technical diploma or apprenticeship. Familiarity with portable machining tools, alignment systems, and CNC equipment is commonly required, and certifications like OSHA or ASNT can be beneficial. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills ensure accurate on-site repairs, minimize downtime, and maintain safety and quality in demanding industrial environments.

What are some common challenges faced by in place machining professionals, and how can they be addressed?

In Place Machining professionals often work in environments where precision is critical and downtime must be minimized, such as power plants or manufacturing facilities. Common challenges include working in confined spaces, adapting to irregular or worn components, and maintaining safety standards while operating heavy equipment on-site. These challenges can be addressed through thorough job planning, use of specialized portable machining tools, continuous safety training, and strong communication with both clients and team members to ensure all requirements are clearly understood and met.

This position is responsible for the safe, efficient, and high-quality execution of machining operations supporting the repair of large electric motors, generators, armatures, rotors, and other critical rotating equipment.
Unlike a traditional production machine shop, IPS specializes in one-of-a-kind repair and remanufacturing projects. Our team routinely machines equipment weighing up to 100 tons (200,000 pounds), supporting customers in power generation, steel, mining, water treatment, manufacturing, petrochemical, and other critical industries.
The successful candidate will be an experienced leader with a strong background in manual machining, heavy industrial equipment, and developing skilled machinists in a fast-paced repair environment.
• Maintain a safe, organized, and hazard-free machining environment while promoting IPS's commitment to safety and operational excellence.
• Lead, mentor, and develop a team of highly skilled manual machinists through coaching, technical guidance, cross-training, and performance development.
• Develop and maintain departmental training plans and ensure employees receive the technical training required to safely and effectively perform their work.
• Plan, direct, and coordinate daily machining operations to support incoming inspections, production repairs, emergency customer requirements, and field service projects.
• Balance manpower, machine utilization, and department capacity to meet customer commitments while maximizing productivity.
• Provide hands-on technical leadership for complex machining projects involving large rotating equipment.
• Ensure machining operations meet engineering drawings, dimensional tolerances, customer specifications, and quality requirements.
• Coordinate closely with Operations, Engineering, Planning, Quality, Sales, and Field Service to ensure projects remain on schedule.
• Support customer visits, technical discussions, inspections, and audits while representing IPS in a professional manner.
• Support the Quality Management System by developing and maintaining machining work instructions, process documentation, and standard work.
• Participate in root cause investigations, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Coordinate preventive maintenance and repair of machine tools and recommend tooling, equipment, and process improvements.
• Manage staffing requirements, labor utilization, overtime, and departmental resources to support production objectives.
• Participate in weekend management coverage and capacity planning as required.
• Assist in developing departmental operating budgets and continuously improve productivity while controlling costs.
• Participate in strategic planning initiatives that support the continued growth of the Cleveland Service Center.
Qualifications and Competencies:

• Previous supervisory, lead machinist, or manufacturing leadership experience preferred.
• Extensive experience operating manual:
• Lathes
• Vertical Turret Lathes (VTLs)
• Horizontal Boring Mills
• Radial Drills
• Keyseaters and other large manual machine tools
• Extensive experience machining:
• Large motor shafts
• Bearing journals
• Bearing housings
• End brackets
• Rotors
• Armatures
• Commutators
• Pump and turbine components
• Other large industrial rotating equipment
• Strong understanding of precision measurement, fits and tolerances, shaft restoration, bearing fits, and repair machining practices.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, repair procedures, and machining blueprints.
• Experience planning and executing one-of-a-kind repair work rather than repetitive production machining.
• Experience with industrial safety programs and safe machining practices.
• Continuous improvement or Lean Manufacturing experience is preferred.
• Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to motivate and develop highly skilled craftspeople.
• Technical education is valued; however, equivalent hands-on machining and leadership experience will be fully considered.
• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to work weekends or extended hours when required to support customer commitments.
